X-CHICKEN, WELCOME TO DIE

« on: December 25, 2012, 02:04:14 PM »

Hello fellow englishmen and ladies Grin I will be in London with a friend from december 29 to january 4, and I thought I could write a thread to have your input about places to go and things we should do there. Here's what we thought of so far:

day1:
Big Ben
London Eye
House of parliament
St jame's park

Day2:
Harry potter studio
Trocadero

Day3:
Natural history and science museum
Trafalgar square
London tower
Leicester square
Covent garden

Day4:
Wallace collection
British museum
Bloomsbury
Picadilly circus
Chinatown

Day5:
Harrods
Guard change at buckingham palace
Regent's garden
Camden

Day6
Greenwich
National maritime museum
OR
Old royal naval college

Bonus stage:
Meet blue geezer
Burger king and starbuck

The list is bigger but I don't have much time because of all the christmas family festing. I will update that post later  Grin
The real purpose for this thread is to find out what to do for new year (we've been thinking of going to a nice pub but i just got told that apparently you have to be 21 for that - we're 20 - so that plan got thrashed Sad )

Most places will follow the "if you look under 25 you will be ID'd" rule, but as far as I'm aware the majority will serve anyone over the age of 18.

I could be wrong as I don't live in London, but I have quite a few 20 year old friends who do and they seem to have no problem finding a suitable drinking hole.

From the thread:

Science Museum....yep, good recommendation but be prepared for loads of kids. Most museums are free. The Tate Modern is impressive but you probably won't have time and the Science Museum is more fun

Trocadero - more touristy than it was but may be worth visiting still. Has Laser tag and a gaming arcade which was quite fun last time I visited but that was a while ago.

Londoners cross roads whenever they feel like it...we're not that bothered about traffic lights or pedestrian crossings. They're just guidance.

Madame Tussauds - don't know why people bother. It's expensive and I don't see how it is any different from any waxworks anywhere

Agree with London Eye - good thing to do but maybe expensive for what it is.

Avenue Q - seen it. It's a good show

Camden - worth visiting. Loads of interesting stalls and shops. This place is great http://shop.cyberdog.net/ Unfortunately it's got more touristy. Not many oldskool ravers anymore.

New Year - as well as the age issue, pubs and clubs at New Year are overpriced and often you have to pay to get in on New Year's Eve, it's easy to get ripped off. Outside New Year's Eve you won't have a problem getting into pubs. You may be better off soaking up the vibe just out and about in Trafalgar Square and by the river, watching the fireworks, and joining in the crowd as it counts down the year with Big Ben. Public transport is free and lasts all night and everyone is out to just enjoy themselves. Keep an eye out for anything fun that might be happening and go with the flow.

http://www.visitlondon.com/things-to-do/event/27002385-mayors-new-years-eve-fireworks-at-edf-energy-london-eye

(one of the best New Year's Eve I had was when a group of us just went to Trafalgar Square with no plans, saw the New Year in, heard there was a party happening in Brixton, tried to drive there in my van, got caught in traffic going down Charing Cross Road and found ourselves starting an impromptu rave with the van as a slowly moving sound system surrounded by dancing crowds...don't think I'd ever had so many New Year kisses  Cheesy)

On New's Day there is the London's New Year's Day Parade

Why Burger King?

Berath: Has raised some very good points!

Burger King is bitchin but as all Londoners know Wimpy is the place to be right AM I RIGHT? EH? EH? *Sticks hand up in the air*

London eye: you might say it costs you an arm and a leg, you might as well chuck in your eye because it is that pricey, for a couple more quid you can get a bottle of champers as well (no toilet, worst 45 min wait ever)

Go and see the tower of London! and report back and tell me if they still have that raven stuck in that cage! Come to think of it they will do but just rotate the birds? I don't know Sad

For boozing it up in London don't bother unless you are willing to sell your kidneys :S

so

so

so

much money's to be spent Sad

Karthus: thanks bro, always got our backs ^^

London is massive and the various attractions are very spread out, plan your visits and use the underground.  Don't even think of driving.

The Harry Potter thing is meant to be good if you like the films/books.

Spare a whole day for the Science/Natural History Museam

Burger King has the advantage of being cheap and better than Macdonalds but dammit there should be somewhere better.

Thanks for the tips everyone (especially Berath's fireworks down the river - we're gonna do that)

According to wikipedia:
Quote
Under the BBPA's Challenge 21 scheme, customers attempting to buy alcoholic beverages are asked to prove their age if in the retailer's opinion they look under 21 even though the law states they must be a minimum of 18. Many supermarket and off-licence chains display Challenge 21 notices stating that they will not serve persons who look under 21 without ID.

I guess we'll be able to drink a pint after all then (after getting ID'd Grin ).

As for Burger King, that's because I thought it would be nice to eat a really good burger at a really good burger joint - we don't have that here. But according to your comments Burger King ain't a good burger joint :p
