I think it just means valve don't have a clue what to do with these people and are disabling them as a panic solution while they figure out what the hells going on and make up some kind of policy.

But when you start to blame the victims you lose sight of who the actual assholes are. I don't have too much pity for the victims, but I want to focus my rage on the f*uckers who use every chance they get to screw with other people.

But the point was valve disabling his account that could of been worth 100's of pounds. For what? It seemed to me he didn't even scam anyone.

I'm not applauding the measures taken, I'm simply acknowledging that (relatively) drastic measures have to be taken to discourage people to scam. Hopefully this leads to a system which works fairly reliably and with proportionate consequences.

The problem occurs if one side's supposed to bring more than 4 items to the table. 5 or 6 items for a rare hat would not be totally unreasonable (e.g. a mix of hats, metal and weapons). So the first transaction would be one-sided (even an honest trader would probably insist on parting from his valuable item only after having secured his side of the trade not to be scammed himself). If the scammer stops the trade then he has 4 items from his victim without having traded anything himself.

I could think of ways to make such a transaction more secure and hope Valve will so something like that.

A popular scam on IRC goes like this

guy comes online, advertising he wants to trade the whooppee cap
advertises for about, 15 mins
Then another guy comes online saying he wants to trade an unusual hat for the whooppee cap
You talk to the new guy, try to get the 1st guys whoppee cap and are willing to make a very generous trade because of what you can get out of it. All the while, trying to keep the guy with the unusual on hold.
You get the whooppee cap, but the 2nd guy fucks off cuz it was the same guy scamming you
