Yup, you should just be able to put your CD key in the "Add a game" thing and it'll do all the installing for you.

I have DoW2 and JC2 on disc you could do the above to skip their install programs or you can run their install programs as normal and they will stick their business in steam happily.

Though the only different thing I've found is that its tutorial is even worse than Civ 4's - it doesn't exist.

Just had a pretty long game until it crashed again, loving it - had 3 empires and two city states at war with me simultaneously, but the mighty Roman empire is not to be taken lightly. Learnt the hard way about unhappiness (conquered a load of Cities in a short space of time and went to around -70, which has taken forever to recover from. Handily defeated the French even with the 33% unhappiness combat penalty though) Now I have my entire supercontinent, trying to tech up so I can transport some units and defeat my remaining foes on the remaining continent (I'm assuming that such a unit exists).

Maritime city states ftw - for a bit of gold every so often you get 2 extra food in every city you own, and they stack. I've got 5 maritime states feeding me now and my population is exploding)

Got it, played it for about an hour, it seems to be much more user friendly than the previous games and prettier of course.  Like the fact you don't have to build roads to everything and the combat is far better, won't be happy until they make Civilization Total War though. 

Can't understand why they took religion out the game and not sure about the social stuff but otherwise seems to be quite good.  No crashes so far.

The demo didn't even start for me until I edited some .ini in my User Settings folder... But then it finally worked and I enjoyed it. Played it for about 2,5 hours when the "SORRY, YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE THE FULL GAME WHICH YOU'VE CLEARLY FORGOTTEN, SO WE WILL STOP YOUR WORLD DOMINATION HERE AND ASK YOU TO BUY THE GAME" screen came up and I was like "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU". Looks really nice. The only Civ I played was Civ 4 and this looks like more fun so far.

One thing I'm struggling with are the workers. They just won't do what I want because they are either out of moves or building something forever. Sometimes some improvements are being built and the number says "1 turns left", on the next turn the thing still isn't complete and on the next turn and on the next turn. For it to actually finish, I have to select the worker unit and tell them to build the same thing again, then it's instantly done. Bug? Automatic mode isn't much help, they are just running around like headless chicken building stuff seemingly random, abandoning roads half way through, wasting 20 turns going to the other city and stuff...

sometimes they stop work power i think because enemy units who could capture them are near but it gets annoying, you have to reissue the build order each turn.

zarf there are no transport units, you need to research optics and then everyone you build after that can magically make themselves a boat. if you built your army pre optics you have to get them promoted and take embarkation.

Religions just caused wars and made for diplomatic negotiations to be both tiresome and pointless -- hardly worth the happiness that they offer. My civil religion was X, but this guy's was Y and one of his policies was Theology -- No chance of any negotiations. Besides, most leaders just hate you because you're there in Civ5 or, in one nasty case where I had to eliminate the Americans, where they grab as much land around you as they can and claim you're "blocking them" from expanding their empire.

I love how some leaders will just call to "tease" you about their apparent strengths/size. I recall once Alexander the Great basically said "You have a tiny empire, I laugh at you!" He might as well have said, in the Heavy's voice, "You are so small!! Is funny to me!" xD!

so.

on 3rd game now. warlord and chieften are as easy as expected. on 3rd game on prince (2 continents, small amount of civs, normal speed) as one of the weaker civs (bismarck) was going to aim for a cultural or science victory when suliman and alexander are right next to me. suliman wants me to declare war with alexander i say 10 turns and agree. however in the mean time alex starts the war with suliman wiping a lot of his units out and weakening himself! 10 turns later i jump in and 20 turns after that i now own the greek empires cities

happiness is annoying as sin so i had to puppet them all and then pray they build theatres/colloseums etc. :/ so 50 turns later suliman now owns half the continent we are on but is tech weak so i declare and after pushing him back to his capital he then begs for peace and i say yes taking all of his cities bar his capital and BOOM 40 unhappiness!!!! even though they were all puppets!

So. i just now discover one of the last two civs accross the waves as gandhi i heavily trade for luxuries and garrison as many units in cities as i can (with the social policy) and get it down to single digits.... i finally get back to happiness by beelining happy techs and buying as many buildings as possible! so eventually take the last of sulimans cities when the treaty runs out and set up trade routes like crazy so i am pulling in lots of gold but barely happy. now 50 turns alter i have that reversed with little gold produced but finally a stable happiness without having everything garrisoned! I find china who has the other continent wrapped up by killing gandhi off in no time.

so i now own a continent china owns the other with a slight lead for them in score with more wonders built. Is there a way to work out who has the best military without waiting for one of those surveys? I suspect i can take her as i think i am ahead tech wise but not by much!

where the buttons are for the advisors etc. there is a little button that looks like a notepad - if you click that I think you get a whole load more options - one of them might be a military/unit list. it's probably just yours though and not the opponents too.

The freedom social policy is crazy awesome for reducing unhappiness in large empires - I knocked around 100 off when i took it.

Currently working on my second game, taking the "one city" challenge. It's interesting and a lot quicker because you aren't messing about with upgrades in a billion cities. Your cultural upgrades expand really quickly and you get loads of wonders. I'm at a bit of a tipping point though, think i'll have to switch from piety to rationalism because if I can't tech up and push back some of the other empires quickly as they will soon be able to out-tech and out-produce me due to number of cities.
I've enjoyed it so much that I think in future games i'll hold off on expanding beyond one city until around turn 150.

It's such a wonderfully balanced game, I always seem to have loads of valid tactics and strategies to choose between.
