It's not 'just' semantics, there's a heck of a difference between exploiting idling and (say) aimbotting, and being called a cheater is pretty cheap and I don't like it. As others have said, they've had four months to address this, so no surprise if people figured Valve were silently ok with it.

On the hats - sure, everyone knows it's just cosmetic. But it's nice to have them, and the cost of obtaining one by idling is pretty low, so a lot of people would think 'hey, why not'. I don't think anyone here is crying, but Valve have handled this pretty badly.

Well if you'd be called cheater, you'd be banned by VAC. You're not banned are you? Using a game mechanic in a way that was not intended is not a great thing, call it what you want.

Besides: you used an external programm to have an "advantage" compared to people who "just" played the game and you were fine with it. Now you don't have those items and people who just played the game got one new item and the idlers just explode? How is THIS fair?

Oh and by the way, where exactly were you called cheaters? As far as I can see, the only mention of the word "cheat" is like this: "cheating the system". And that is not the same as "using a cheat". Sure they could write it like "exploiting the system". But if that is not a matter of semantics, I don't know what is then. Just don't pick out a single thing that you can complain about, there are far deeper flaws in the whole system as it is, but probably not in a way you think (since you took an advantage of this flawed system).

Hmm... well the next Frag Fest should go under the motto of Hell vs. Heaven with all saints against the devils. That way the angered idlers can also unleash their holy fury on the evil evil saints, who really are to blame in all this.

The idle server replicated a legit and real world server activity. You could either go to a real server and idle... (completely legit) or use a fake server and idle (now not legit).

The only difference is that a player in a fake idle server didn't use up real server slots or bandwidth. Claws could have got stuff by sitting on WDG server and inconveniencing others but he didn't. I can't see how using the "fake" server makes you a cheat and the real server doesn't.

Its a bit like me being arrested for speeding on a motorway, but being let off on a country a-road. Is speeding a crime or not? Is idling cheating or not? If its cheating, then simply don't allow weapon / hat drops to idle players... simple really Valve..

Root of all this is an utter crap drop system that can't detect if people are idle or not.

Secondly, Claws HAS been labelled a cheat - even if he's not been banned for it. The label is there regardless of the punishment.. and that's also the problem I have here.

EDIT (sorry, didn't think it was fair if I would disregard your other arguements):
If you want to make this about differences (and I go waaaay out for this one): You could go on a server and shoot someone by moving your crosshair (which is legit) and pressing your mouse button or you could do it by making an external application doing the aiming for you and pressing your mouse button (not legit). Where is the difference here? One is playing as intended and the other is exploiting the system (with an external application). And remeber, I am not saying you cheated. Actually Claws is the only one who says he was called a cheater and I don't see how, which is why I asked to clarify.

I don't know why Valve didn't react to idling on a server yet, maybe it's not as easy to detect as being on a fake server as opposed to a legit one? Whoops, another difference here!

The best case you can do here, is accusing Valve of being hypocrite (sp?) by only punishing one part of the people abusing the system (being the idlers with the external app) and not both of them (including those who idle on legit servers). But even so, it doesn't make what you did any different, that is exploiting a system which wasn't meant to be used in that way. Using an external app for it is just an added bonus to it.

Seriously though, I couldn't care less what you do in your private time (though it was sad to see that most people on my friends list, that I wanted to join and have fun with, were just idling for some 1337 pixels (thx hzza!) instead of having fun) - all I am opposed to are idlers calls for the great injustice that came upon them. No one there to blame but themselves. My opinion.

I stand corrected, there is no label on the steam profile... just a "cheat detector" item in the backpack.

This lessens the issue for me tbh... if there is no permanent "black mark" on the steam profile.

Totally agreed, i dont actually mind being punished by deleting the items, but i dont like much the thing with halos. Not sure what Valve is trying to achieve with all this, few reasons come on my mind:
a) only trying to piss off idlers
b) split the community, outcast idlers
c) trying to show everyone how would it look if almost everyone would have a hat (no-rarity)
d) nobody at Valve exactly knows what are they doing

Btw, anyone played since the halos came out? Does it look okay or is it annoying while playing?

Actually your not entirely correct.....

Yes they are both speeding, but this is not the offence Valve are punishing for.  Its the fact that in a live server you are using a fully Valve mot'd and serviced car.

Valve are punishing you for using a car some random bloke has made and its not road safe.

Again I agree with power over being labelled a cheat, its semantics.  Its a game, and you have done something against the rules (TOS)...... you have cheated.

I too used the idle tool, who cares if people call you a cheat for using it......

edit: ppl called us cheats before the punishment came out anyway....

That item is probably how they caught the idlers in first place. There was a theory that the game disregarded this items (ninja update or after the latest update) while Drunken F00l's application didn't. As such, whoever had this item, had used this application to get it - punishment. Not very elegant and as we all know Valve - didn't really work 100%, which is why there are random items missing yet again. But not really an attempt to put a stigma on the idlers.

The thing with halos. let me present you another option:

f) reward the people who did nothing wrong and hoped that the system will work eventually and at the same time made up for the apparently way too low drop rates on the hats (they upped them significantly if you'll remember).
