What I don't get is why they didn't ask drunken fool to just stop with a nice email within one week of him publishing it.
If he said yes, it would have all been stopped dead in it's track: He has control of the (needed!) servers, he is the only one with the source and the only one if the server binary. Everybody else would've had to start completely from scratch!
If he said no, they could've just threatened to ban him (loosing all your games so others can get random items more easily? nobody would do that) or follow their old strategy.
All it would have cost them is the five minutes of writing a god damn email. (And they
were
in contact with him about the site tf2items.com!)
Instead they punished a big part (the numbers on the blog are clearly not % of the active players!) of the community without a single warning and split it up, which was VERY foreseeable!

The tool circumvents it cuz you dont actually connect to a server, it tricks steam into thinking you are....

Thats not exactly what TF2 is meant to be.
There were much better ways to get rid off the idler.
But the examples above aren't Valve's fault, it's the immature fools fault who can't deal with what happened to them and who decide to react in idiotic ways. (And those who decide to react in idiotic ways to those who reacted in idiotic way, which is not really any better). Which is why I brought up that thread to show how immature the community is in first place.
Basically the single flaw in Valve's thinking with the WHOLE idea of weapons/items tied to achievements or to some other factors whatever those might be, is that they have that idea, that people would play along fair if they could exploit their idea instead. They didn't make everything available to everyone on purpose as they are trying to stretch the amount of time you spent with the game untill you've seen it all (where it stops being exciting for many people). But the people don't really care about shit like this. People want THAT SHINY and they want it now. So who's to blame for people unable to control their NEED for everything there is in shortest time possible. Valve? Or the people?
Imagine you'd be getting one extra weapon or hat (unique iteams, no duplicate) once a week on a specific date. There would STILL be people trying to cheat the system by changing their system date, flashing their BIOS, faking the server datastream or whatever. It's just human nature. It is possible to fuck up every idea, no matter the good intentions of it.

Just realised how odd mine and disco convo is...
Disco didnt use tool has halo and is arguing against the removal of items
I did use it (my items are still there presently but will be removed) and I'm arguing for their removal lol

In my opinion you are arguing semantics egg. Would it have been ok if he had released a mod that basically shuts down rendering for tf2 (reducing resource usage) and modified a tf-server to allow 1000 people to join?

actually hzza halo is bugged. it showed up for me before i had it. you have to go in server and get killed to actually receive it and be able to equip and even then it crashed my tf2 gui and i had to restart

Yes because its still a real server, bound by the rules within the coding from valve.
Which also means the scenario you state is more than likely not possible

valve have punished people for using the old exploits like hiding beneath the level if they were reported. just because valve have coded crappily doesn't mean you should take advantage of that just because its something you can do in a normal VACd server.
Also cruel 95.5% should have halos going by the blog but yes its a bit stupid of valve to expect that poking a little fun at these people won't get taken way to far by the many idiots of the steam forums.

Yeah, we're really looking to a bright special future, where everyone has every single hat, so everyone looks just the same as everybody else. Nice plan.
Just sit tight. The drop chance was almost doubled apparently as Valve is backing out of the idea of hats being something special. This behaviour will bite the idlers in the ass in the long run. Wow you idled for weeks to get that one hat that everyone has now, good job!
Just as I always said in several achievement farmer topics elsewhere: "Just play the fucking game, that's why you bought it, right?"

I have big doubts about the 95.5%!
I guess that's all people who CAN play TF2 (i.e. bought Orange Box)
And if really 95.5% of all players got it and equip it, spies around the world will start to cry, since disguises STILL don't include hats!
Uhmm power, didn't you want to revert to original tf2, aka everybody has the same hat? You're contradicting yourself there.
And right now, I'd say about 80% of all people are wearing the same hat (within the same class), if everybody had the option of 4 hats for each class, we clearly would have MORE diversity.
