Drivers are usually the thing that takes a while to be released.. but they always come in the end..
I went from XP x86, to Vista HP x86, to Vista HP x64, to Vista Ultimate x64 and have only seen 2 issues.. 1 was a WIFI card (the one that I'm now selling) and the 2nd was a Firewire audio interface.. but the audio interface now has x64 drivers (they're beta but they work very well.. better than the origional x86 drivers )

You might find that if you have some obscure hardware that isnt for general computing/gaming (like an old USB1.1 hub, anything DAW related or some video capture card) that it will require a dual boot at first.. but give it a while, stay connected to the right info and youll get what you need!

No, just still have the RC1 lying around and was considering to give it a testdrive without to replace my working system. Since I bought a new HD I can spare a few GB for that purpose.

I guess my scanner might bite the dust should I go 64bit (which I plan to).

You will find that Win7 has a lot of drivers built in - it even played nicely with my TV Tuner - which wasn't ever even properly supported by vista!

What's the best way to backup my steam games if I'm going from xp 32bit to 64bit win7?

I'm guessing I'll be forced to use the backup facility in steam? Though I'm not even sure that will work.

Just copy all of your steam folder somewhere and later start steam once on the new system, copy everything back and "install" the games you want to have available. Steam saves EVERYTHING within that folder, you don't really need to care about anything, except if you have 3rd party games on steam, which may have some files elsewhere (like in your Application Settings folder or something).

Most important are the .gcf files in your SteamApps folder, those you will have to redownload if they aren't there. But your configs and such are in the folder with your account name, so if you don't copy that over, you'll lose all your configs (but the game will install and start just fine).

Just make sure you restart steam once you copied the files over (or shut it down before you copy them over).

I'm half way through a two day course for win7, and some things do look nice and shiny (for in a business environment anyway )

I have *just* copied my whole steam folder from one drive to another and it works perfectly. The only thing you'll have to do is re set-up the shortcuts on your desktop etc.

Mmmm, makes me think I'll start planning a new PC to put Windows 7 on and use my current 6-HDD beast as a remote 64bit linux server. I'll think of some details, this forum is a goldmine for planning (although I still need to get some new peripherals at some point anyway, so might get them first).

One thing on Windows 7, people need to make some good guides - I want the juicy insides of the pro/business/whateverisn'tquiteultimate edition so I can sort it how I like. I wish Tweakguides did one on Windows, heh. If anyone finds some good ones, post them up (once it's out of course).
