Pantastic Papa!

« on: June 12, 2009, 09:48:10 AM »

OK guys, I'm trying to make a decision about my OS. I'm using XP Pro 32bit. I want to be able to use more ram (both system and graphics) and XP limits me to about 3GB. So that means going for a 64bit OS.

The big question, XP Pro 64 bit or **GULP** Vista?

I'm tempted by Vista as it's been out long enough to have sorted the early driver issues it was plagued with. I would like to have DX10. The prices are about the same for later technology. Do they do a 64 bit Home Premium version? Is DX10 worth pursuing? Would I better off with the older and more familiar XP albeit in 64bit thus opening up my RAM options?

What do u guys think?

Yeah, I'd say the same thing, wait for Windows 7, apparently it comes out in November..... maybe.

DX10 is not really worth it at the moment from what I've heard.

I've used Vista a little and I didn't like it.  The Vista project manager must of been fired from an old people's home for being too patronising.

XP limits my PC to 3.25Gb

At the chair I've been using xp64 a bit, it wasn't that bad. Steam games ran pretty much flawlessly (albeit in 32bit emulation mode).
Of course it was most useful on apps that were native 64bit (Cinema4D comes to mind)...

If you really need a new install now, then I'd still go with xp64. Else wait for 7. (Or install 7RC or something, since you will probably be reinstalling anyway by the time 7 rolls around...)

I've been using Vista (32 and 64) for a couple of years now and I've never had any troubles. I missed the whole "Vista is bad" thing as I didn't have a computer at that time and I have to say I haven't seen any evidence of any kind of dodgyness and I think it's probably an unnessessary stigma it's picked up. Infact the only complaint I have is of the obnoxious UAC thing that moans at you when you've got it turned on, then moans twice as much when you have it turned off. I only have it on because my girlfriend isn't the most internet savy person in the world and I don't want her giving my computer e-aids from all the retarded links she clicks on (she actually came running in the other day with the laptop in her hands saying about how she was the millionth visitor to this website and had won a prize. I laughed at her so much I think she now has some form of leprosy). As everyone else has said though, with Windows 7 around the corner it's probably a good idea to wait until that comes out.

Would also suggest Vista 64, but don't personally think it's worth waiting for Windows 7 (wouldn't install an RC, couldn't be bothered to wait until November, and doubt I'd install anything new from Microsoft for at least a year even if I could be bothered)

Vista ain't as bad as people say. If you really wanna skip it, you can bridge the Windows 7 with the RC.

I love vista and would always recomend it..
But I wouldnt recomend spending £100 for your purchase to be outdated in less than a year..
wait for windows 7.. its not that far away and will blow vista out of the water Tongue

If you really want out of XP, I would recomend Vista Home Premium (depending on your system) x64 (also depending on your system)
It unlocks all your ram potential and you can pick up an OEM copy for about £80ish

I'm finding Vista 64 pretty stable actually.

Avoid XP 64 as drivers are still a concern - its also been leapfrogged I think.

Windows 7 probably the best bet Dave - to avoid pointless outlay from Vista to 7.

I don't see Windows 7 "blowing" Vista away tbh, it will just address some annoying issues. It will be different, but no world apart. In any event, it makes sense top go for 64 bit.

I have 8GB of RAM and love the extra responsiveness in the OS.

Same advice here: Wait for Win7.
Projected release date in Germany is October 22nd, so it's not that long to wait.

As it was been pointed out already: There's a RC for Win7 available for download. So if you need to reinstall you could consider using that (to bridge the time until the official release). However, since it's only a RC should should take a few extra precautions with valuable data.

Wait for win 7.

Vista was a pain in the ass. I had it for about a year till october 2008 and it sucked so bad, as I switched back to XP I realized how much better the games run on XP. Its about 20-30 fps more. Especially TF2. It crashed all the time and now it works totally fine.

So, you better keep that XP OS or you wait for win 7. I tested the RC on a side partition and it worked really well, I havent checked out some games yet, but Im defo gonna do that.

I went from XP to Vista as soon as it was released.

I completely agree that there is a performance drop from XP to Vista, but I find vista to be more stable than XP (easier to recover from a crash, less bluescreens) and if you have a fairly decent PC then you probably wouldn't notice it.

I wouldn't say I was a fanboy or anything like that...but I've been using it since it first came out and I can't see what all the fuss is about. It's like buying anything... you buy a house, you need to decorate and furnish it how you like it - you get a basic decor (beige walls anyone?) but to get your house like you want it (i.e. disabling UAC, a few tweaks here and there) you have to put in a little effort.

Saying that, it would be pointless spending money on vista now with Windows 7 right around the corner, or even sillier to spend money on XP64.

I would suggest waiting til windows 7 is released, or use the RC1 - i used the first beta and found it to be very stable - and as you're not using it for anything too critical / can back everything up then I don't see any reason why not?

XP limits me to about 3GB. So that means going for a 64bit OS.

XPx86 Limits you to 4GB Wink , but this includes all cache memory, VRAM, ect. etc. So if you graphics card is 1gb you will instantly lose this off your potential system RAM Wink

Why is it called Windows 7?

And since I also didn't know why it's called 7:
Quote
Numbering this version of Windows as "7" has confused many users, so on October 14, 2008 Nash clarified his earlier remarks, saying:
“The very first release of Windows was Windows 1.0, the second was Windows 2.0, the third Windows 3.0. Here's where things get a little more complicated. Following Windows 3.0 was Windows NT which was code versioned as Windows 3.1. Then came Windows 95, which was code versioned as Windows 4.0. Then, Windows 98, 98 SE and Windows Millennium each shipped as 4.0.1998, 4.10.2222, and 4.90.3000, respectively. So we're counting all 9x versions as being 4.0. Windows 2000 code was 5.0 and then we shipped Windows XP as 5.1, even though it was a major release we didn't want to change code version numbers to maximize application compatibility. That brings us to Windows Vista, which is 6.0. So we see Windows 7 as our next logical significant release and 7th in the family of Windows releases...There's been some fodder about whether using 6.1 in the code is an indicator of the relevance of Windows 7. It is not. Windows 7 is a significant and evolutionary advancement of the client operating system. It is in every way a major effort in design, engineering and innovation. The only thing to read into the code versioning is that we are absolutely committed to making sure application compatibility is optimized for our customers."
