The Samsung and Intel ones on the other hand hare extremely quick.. and this is the first mainstream attempt at SSDs for the market which is good IMO, good sign of things to come, but not yet, not untill its a lot cheaper.

If you go to the OCZ forums, there are quite a few tricks you can use to improve performance on the Core/Solid/Apex series drives. You have to do stuff like Partition Alignment, and activate a windows feature that intercepts and caches writes.
The Vertex series is apparently out at the end of this week (apparently, i'm still bitter with OCZ after waiting months for my NIA), and you should perform similarly with the Intel drives, without needing you to tweak anything. They should drop to a reasonable price too after the initial few weeks ... on that note, the Intel drives have had a price cut and are down to £350 for the 80GB drive. Two of those in RAID0 are pretty stonking.

Top Tip for static -

but HDDs are at a point now where you could buy 7 1TB drives for a raid array for the price of 2 of those SSDs
so 7TB fast and secure Vs 160GB Superfast and unsecure?

RAID0 risks are less of an issue with SSD's, since they are much less prone to failure. Still, nothing stopping you buying a 40 quid 500GB drive and having a nightly backup scheduled.

When they reach £1/GB I'll be replacing my 2x 150GB raptors. I don't really have space issues thanks to my file server, all my important stuff is safely tucked away in RAID5. My gaming comp is pretty much only vista and game installs.

Builds nearly done (I was slacking majorly over the weekend, Valentines and all that) all I need is 1 (one!) SATA cable (stupid DVD drive not coming with one Sad). My question is; is there a difference between SATA 1 and 2, and will it matter in the cable I buy?! Don't want to go into PC World and make an ass out of myself infront of some 17 year old school leaver that knows more about computers then I could ever hope to!

A fairly non-technical answer this but SATA 2 is just faster...(I think maybe twice as fast?) but the cable is the same! They usually have them on the shelves in PC world, hopefully avoiding that awkward conversation entirely Wink
