As with everything Tom, a proper backup will get you out of trouble. RAID 0 is easy to set up (as Jordan says) but its something you do very early on (i.e. not after a windows install or you lose everything while setting up the RAID).

DON'T FALL FOR RAID! PLEASE!!!

It does sound good. Oh yer! But as has been said, unless you are backing up regular it will be a world of pain. There is preshious little out there that will convince me that software RAID off a motherboard is a good idear.

Last year my brother wanted to try RAID. So after a chat about the various different modes, he opted for RAID 0+1. So 2 drives acting as one big drive with two more drives running as a real time clone. Worked great. It started quickly, rendered his work fast and all the time he was content in the knowledge that all was being backed up as he went. Then it went tits up. Total data loss. The timeing couldn't have been worse, he lost 10 days worth of work with a dead line for a client in 4 days time. He doesn't run RAID any more.

To be honest, if you want to go down the RAID route then seriously invest in a desent "HARDWARE" RAID controler card. A basic PCI one that will do 2 SATA drives at either RAID 0, RAID 1 or JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) should set you back about £60. A desent 3Ware RAID controler card on the other hand will set you back a lot more. About £170 for a card that will support only 2 drives and give you only RAID 0, JAID 1 or JBOD. One that will work with Windows, handle 4 or more SATA drives and have RAID 0+1, RAID 5, RAID 10 (and a whole bunch of other RAID modes). For that kind of fun you won't get getting much change out of £260.

Rippy, I have to say that response is sort of like the "airplanes are dangerous because one has crashed" view - despite the fact that it is by far the safest form of transport (statistically more likely to be killed in your own car).

RAID has its risks - and striping on RAID 1 means that you'd have to be VERY unlucky to lose the lot (but, it does have to happen to someone so your poor brother just happened to be really caught out).

My point about a separate backup - RAID isn't perfect, and a DVD backup or a portable drive is ideal for a really secure and reliable backup option. Even business that use RAID have other backups in place Wink I do however appreciate that your brother did more than most using twin RAID (0 and 1)!!!

Haha a DVD backup is all very well and good but if it gets scratched (which is more likely in my life than a hard drive fail) your screwed!
I have been using MOBO RAID for years without issues (just the 1 array went down, 2 Hitachi Deskstars)
If you buy some half decent Hard Drives youll be fine, If you buy the basic ones (Hitachie Deskstars included) youll be screwed after a while.. but as long as you have another hard drive for storage theres no problem! backup everything on it and your good to go!

I usually re-install monthly anyways cuz Im always changing parts/rebuilding ect and I dont mind it, theres plenty of free backups softwares out there so theres no excuse for lost data (apart from not being able to afford the hard drive in the 1st place)
