Sick of the fucking lappy, want a decent desktop! I got £700(ish) to blow and would preferably like to build something meself (should be fun  ). The only problem is I've never done anything like this before and have no idea where to begin! Basically, I want to be able to play games without all the grief and agro I've been having and have a decent system that I can upgrade every now and then; nothing "next gen" or anything massivly fancy. As I don't really know what I'm doing, I don't fancy overclocking (no matter how many guides Chaos makes, I'm never going to fucking understand it!). I'm pretty sure I can nick a decent monitor from work, but will need pretty much everything else. Except a mouse. And a mousemat.

Hit me with your reccomendations!

Nah, thats these blokes ... http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net/customizer.html . They are the old-school IBM keyboards with the awesome mechanical switches, but you can order with modern USB connectors. Quite a lot to pay for a keyboard, but you could bludgeon someone to death with one easily (they are built on a steel plate! )

Alternatively, these guys - http://www.daskeyboard.com/  ,If you want to appear really 1337 you can order a version with unlettered keys.

On the subject of building a new PC, it might be interesting to put together one based around the Phenom2 . the 3.0Ghz quad core black edition is only £190, and motherboards are from around £73 for decent ones.

AMD fully support and encourage overclocking on their black edition processors, and as such they are multiplier unlocked to make it really easy to overclock them.

Ah, the noise is part of the charm, and mechanical switches are unbeatable for doing any serious typing on, which is why I still know people who have their 15+ year old IBM keyboards on their modern PC's.
I traded mine away in the late 90's because I needed a USB keyboard for gaming (PS2 only accepts 3 keypresses held at the same time) Very tempted by these modern USB versions though.

The point of having no letters on the keys is so that you can show off how geeky you are to other people, it wouldn't matter in a dark room Quite impressive with programmers because you need to learn where all the symbols etc are as well.

Every now and then I break out my old dell basic usb keyboard... It does the job for emails and proposals very nicely with no bells and whistles... Im sure this das is the ultimate version...

can you even buy one in the uk?

Can a moderator split out the keyboard discussion? (no offence to the original post of course, this is just interesting!) My keyboard is getting dog eared, and knowing what ones people use, and why, and what is out there at what reasonable or not cost would be good.

If your new... this is an easy to understand look at building computers..
He explains pretty much everything you need to know and a lot more! and he uses easy to understand terminology and explains the harder stuff as he goes...
Take a look Hzza if your a bit daunted by the task

He also says it takes between 2-6 hours to put it together... I got it down to about 20 mins now if theres no overclock and WC... cables will be pretty managed but nothing amazing

I'd go for somthing like this. These is plenty of flexability in there, such as dropping the soundcard, if you want to upgrade any part of it. The case is also of course a matter of taste. I think its a good starting point tho. Wont have any problem playing most modern games with that gfix card + CPU combo.

2Gb has no future profing and 64bit is better than 32bit now...
and I would still say have the 4850 1024Mb card over the 4870 512Mb
I have both cards and Still say that the 4850 is better for the money they cost..
ssave your cash and buy a nice keyboard/headset
