Over the course of the closed beta test of Global Offensive through Steam, Valve eventually realized the need to update each version of GO separately on each platform took priority over a system where PS3 and PC players could headshot each other with AKs. "The beta has proved we want to update not just the beta, but the game itself post-launch frequently on the PC," Faliszek told Joystiq. "To do that we need to separate the platforms so one doesn't hamstring the other." Thats not the first time they tried to do that, I was able to play Portal 2 with a friend who had it on ps3 back when it came out, that was pretty kewl. I dunno if it was old xbone or ps2 but my friend had the console version of old counterstrike on that (which sucked ass) and for whatever reason it allowed you to use the keyboardmouse peripheral and we just wasted dudes left and right with that. Its just a weird concept thats unfair by default unless you add some sort of compromise for controller users but then you mess with balance. Microsoft tried to do that with Shadowrun, that had crossplay but yeah go figure PC users dominated.

Be good if you're the kind of person who refuses to play fps games on a controller even when they're designed to be played on a controller.
I'm wondering if it's also aimed at players like me. I've never used a controller. When I've tried to use it with my PS3 I find it really unintuitive and to be honest half the time I can't be bothered Some of the point of it may be to get people who only use keyboard and mouse into the living room playing games on tv using a controller

I'm sure that if you find a controller unintuitive you'll find this touchpad controller super intuitive.

For me, I have a TV in my flat that I switch on maybe twice a month on average since having it, and the same for sitting on my sofa. Sometimes I don't want to sit at a desk chair all evening and would like to lie down/slob out on my sofa.
So for me...this sounds like a great solution (?!?). I'd guess that I won't be able to play all of the games on it, but there are certainly plenty that are good with a controller and maybe that'll get better with time if this takes off.

I'm pretty sure the reason Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony never tried this kind of controller is that their R&D teams are too small and inexperienced.

Nintendo are the like the leaders in wacky/crazy controllers though - wiimotes, nunchucks and the whole WiiU "thing". The PS4 controllers have a touchpad - but it doesn't replace the analogue sticks. I'd imagine it's more that they have to be pretty similar to their previous generation or else it'll upset the status quo of gamers on those particular platforms. Even if they tried to introduce something like that as an additional controller - it would need dev support etc. and wouldn't think it would be something they'd even want to do.

All big tech firms preserve the status quo as long as possible and avoid innovation. Its risk developing new tech and the big firms usually bet against an upstart showing up. Its also better for them to sell old stuff as long as poss before bringing in a new peoduct only when they have to. Some sectors like tv size for ridicolous penis compensation move on a much faster timescale but even these will try to hold back stuff if they can.

Yeah I bet none of those companies would try a wacky input method which distinguished themselves from their competitors.
Maybe Valve can make a motion sensitive wand, voice control, balance board or maybe some sort of full body capture system next.

what's that.
The deep abiding sarcasm I've laden on this page aside, I reckon it'll be a decent replacement for m+kb in games that don't actually need precision.

Brahms' sarcarsm aside - I only really see Kinect & PS Move as an MS/Sony response / incremental improvement to the Wii.

Tried to post earlier. Making crappy gimmick inputs doesnt count. Adding dumb new features or copying a dumb new feature is low risk. The wiimote is the only attempt to change the main input status quo in decades. It did ok but ultimately failed. Sticking a screen on it for the wiiu is going back to risk averse behaviour after a failure and just adding a new gimmick feature.
I dont think the steam controller is the next thing either but its an attempt at least. And a more competant one that dimtendos.
