Holy shit, I just though...if it's meant to replicate a mouse/keyboard in some modes (which it does seem to do fairly well?) - can you swap the pads so the left one is the 'mouse' style one?

It's all supposed to be an open design, so yeah. Even if the standard configuration tool for button mapping doesn't let you someone can write a new tool.

Sounds pretty locked down at least from that article. Towards the end it says valve are planning on adding other services like music and video, although they wont support spreadsheets. Then again its probably just the dumb author being too taken with the steam controller and not asking for any real details on SteamOS.

What do you mean by locked down? I assume they just mean that those things aren't currently available from within the steam client itself (ie pictures/video etc.) but it doesn't mean you wouldn't be able to use a Linux app etc. instead?

http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamOS/"It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines." "Users can alter or replace any part of the software or hardware they want."

Well with Steam's 65 million active accounts they've got quite a potential user base to talk about

Not sure what to do, save for a steam machine, or a new car.

If its a free open source linux distro then hooray. But they certainly haven't announced that yet and have stuck to being vague.

I think the reason it hasn't been explicitly stated as such is it wouldn't mean much to many and most don't care. Clearly there will be some parts of the OS that will not be open source (given DRM requirements etc). Think this sums it up quite nicely: "SteamOS, a version of GNU/Linux to be distributed by Valve, is not actually released for download yet. At present, we can say that it is very unlikely to be an operating system which respects user freedom, because it is meant to work closely with the Steam service. Steam uses Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) to impose restrictions on the software it distributes. SteamOS will have to contain the proprietary software necessary to enforce these restrictions. It will also be designed to promote and integrate with the Steam store, which promotes a large amount of proprietary software." http://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.htmlI expect most will be fine with any specific restrictions due to the above.
