I know what you mean abda, there was a purity and a mystery to mc back in those days and some stuff has messed with it, but I think if we could go at it with new eyes now it'd still have a lot of that. maybe not enchanting but stuff like the actual mines and strongholds and villages to find like that would have been pretty amazing. Not to mention the map generator with huge biomes is just better. Stuff like pistons feels like it should have always been there.

I do think he caved to pressure a bit putting in the ender dragon and unfortunately he half arsed it. MC will never be a game with good combat unless he adds blocking or dodging and I doubt those are coming. In My Opinion the game shouldn't be trying to extend in those respects [fights and missions] but should be focused on making the world more interesting. Make cats walk around my base and sit on my bed, or have some sort of dynamic assaults on villages (heard this is coming) have some weird findable artefacts with weird effects that aren't immediately obvious, or weird scary creatures that lurk down near bedrock, things like that. Trying to add on a layer of tactics and structure on mc doesn't fit what I want out of it.

I know this post is just annoying wishlisting but eh, I felt like doing some annoying wishlisting.

blocking has been in the game forever, theres just little reason to do it. Saves you some armour durability but armour is just disposable now.

Seiges are in the game they just don't work super great atm. Zombies infect villagers and can rapidly destroy a village and iron golems don't spawn without high numbers. The iron golem spawn I think also causes a massive seige but its usually right inside the town because of lighting and defences and as a result very annoying and not fun.

There are weird and very powerful new things that you get from long winded mob killing, item experimenting, and then boss fighting, then crafting stuff. The main thing to that is don't look on the wiki, but its minecraft so you look on the wiki.

No the beacon block provides an aoe buff, but the means of acquiring one is long winded exploration, experimentation and a little fighting. Theres an in-game clue towards starting it but I feel like its still a bit difficult to happen across it without knowing theres stuff like that or roughly where to start. It doesn't suck in itself but the pointers to get you started on it are difficult.

Seiges are still new and a wip and hopefully become less stupid before too long.

Blocking has been in for ages and just sucks. I imagine the combat system will get another revamp one day but thats not going to happen soon.

I guess if beacon AOE stuff and Sieges were both implemented well it could be cool and quite organic.. finda town, try 2 defend it, keep getting beaten, fall back, set out 2 find beacon etc etc.

You can also jump to do crits and stuff, but I feel in general potions and enchanting have rendered the modest combat mechanics pointless. Enchanting is now finally serving the purpose it was meant to do, a single expedition with fighting for an hour or two will give you enough experience for one level 30 item without serious grinding, so its both incentive and reward. And potions while slightly complicated provides various buffs and cool powers, invisibility and night vision from the latest updates are VERY cool potions. Night vision is brewed using carrots and sets the sky to a weird luminescent colour and all block lighting to max.

Both bring cool things to the game but I do feel like they overshadow the combat mechanics now, because theres very little point dodging projectiles or blocking strikes when you have max enchanted diamond armour, and your town blacksmith sells full diamond gear (mine does). Trading in that respect has also brough great purpose to farming along with getting ingredients for potions and various foods, but its also made mining often pointless when you could farm more. XP helps encourage you to go mine again at least. I can see where they are trying to go with motivation and rewards but its still not quite a perfect system and combat has been rendered obsolete as a result.

They just need to bring in stuff to encourage you to take combat seriously, like higher drop rates for doing a ton of crit damage in a jump attack, maybe some xp from a block (limited so you can't block spam).

Jump attacks don't make combat more interesting though, they just mean you have to jump everytime you want to attack someone... the dash attack IS a bit interesting as it lets you do a bit of crowd control, but I feel the lack of attack animations is the real killer.. things just get near you and then you start to feel hurt, it's pretty weak.

This one is proving a little unstable (that or hawt has dug a massive hole somewhere or something). Its running out of memory every 1-2 days atm just poke me on steam if it needs a reboot, and gah, we are going to have to update again next thurs to fix this. I will try to hold it there until 1.4 short of urgent bugfixes or supercool new things.

The crash issue is still plaguing the server. Sorry about that everyone. Downgrading is awkward especially as new blocks got added so i'm going to keep hoping for a fix. Unfortunately jeb is on holiday this week and theres no snapshot.

The main issue is the server runs out of memory which causes an eventual crash, i'm not sure if this is a bug in minecraft or just bloating resource requirements that will be present with the 1.4 release. I've reported the issue to jeb and someone else is having similar issues. Hopefully this gets sorted in time for next weeks snapshot. Dinnerbone has just overhauled the lighting engine which was a serious resource hog so that could help. Hes already dreaming up ways to make the lighting fancier but those will be optional I hope.

This is what happens when Brahms stops being draconian about keeping things on released builds and lets Disco run rampant. As i don't really play anymore I don't think it's right to impose myself on the people who do.

I recommendif people really hate the weird crashes they start throwing their weight around in this thread.

It was fun till it broke. Now that dinnerbone took care of lighting the only thing left in the game thats broken and never fixed by notch is powered minecarts, which have a viable alternative. Theses snapshots have fixed a lot of gameplay issues that notch never seemed to want to address. I think they have already reached feature freeze, and compared to notch era minecraft this is annoying but not completely fatal to playing. When I first started using them my opinion was that the gameplay fixes they added outweighed some slight annoyances.

36a is a possible rollback however. It has the most important gameplay fixes, and was stable. I kept moving forward from 37a in the hope that they'd pick it up quickly but now with any possible fix delayed until next thursday it might be a good point just to move back. A complete rollback would be a pain but 36a I think would just lose a few entities (pumpkin pies and bats). I'm not 100% certain what would happen these entities might remain in place until minecraft knows what to do with them again, it might reject the map, or it might just delete stuff. I've not attempted one before. Can backup the map and try though, I expect it won't be too problematic.

If we do rollback though when do we risk moving forward again. We could just wait it out for halloween and make do, but lighting engine performance boosts likely to be in 39a will be a big help for server and client.

EDIT: Today our hero of minecraft dinnerbone added light source occlusion. There is one thing actually that they don't dare fix yet that he still needs to look at. Water is still goofy but primarily it doesn't know what to do with a whole bunch of new blocks.

This snapshot was supposed to be cancelled and the lighting code rewrite isn't complete but whatever it seems to run faster and the server isn't instantly at 100% memory usage. If some people could update and jump on to give it a bit of a stress test that would help.

Also occlusion was already in the game i think. what dinnerbone has been fixing is half slabs and stairs and weird blocks that the current lighting ignores.
