I'd also recomend looking at a couple of youtube videos on how to remove/apply thermal paste as there is a bit of an art to it. It's also a bit of a bastard to remove so I found seeing someone else do it really handy.

Good suggestion. When it comes to putting thermal grease back on the guides on Arctic Silver's site are very useful (whether you're using their products or not):

does i7 still use the ultra annoying push-pin heatsinks? If that's the case it's likely that one of the corners has popped out.

For thermal grease you can pick up "special" removal fluid (I've got some Akasa citrus based stuff) which works a treat put a couple of drops on, leave for a minute and then it just lifts off with a cloth or kitchen towel.

Artic silvers guides aren't all that special, best bet is just to put a blob in the center and (most importantly) make sure you put the heatsink on level so it squeezes the paste evenly in all directions.

Look on the bright side, at least the fix isn't going to be $100+ on a new PSU .

It's exactly that. The arrows on the pushpins point towards the unlocking direction. And it's even more treacherous, because, when I turned my motherboard around, it looked like it was all done, then I gave the fan a good yank, *pop* all of em got loose again.
I can see how I could make such an obvious mistake so easily now.

Running prime95 again, looks like it's holding at about 81-82 degrees. Far from optimal, but a lot better than 100 allready.

I think I'm getting a new CPU fan, a heavier one. Even for the notoriously hot i7's, i want that temperature down.

Some good tips in thar, I think I went with the Artic Freezer 7 which was about £20 and keeps my shit below 50 under load (I think, can't remember the last time I did a heat check...)

my i7 is overclocked to 4ghz, this is my heatsink

it has some fancy fan on it too that moves large volumes. ive not bothered really testing it much and its idling at 40 C which is a little high but probably down to the overclock and how long i leave my pc on for atm.

I have one of these on my i7 overclocked to 3.8GHz, don't think i've ever seen it go over 45 degrees C. I don't know how easy or difficult it is to install though as I got my pc from PC Specialist.

Ordered a Corsair H50 (=Watercooled). Figured I got the space to put it away (Coolermaster Cosmos S case) and people tell me it's quite effective.

Played a game of LOL just to make sure, no crash, temperature records show my CPU never went over 60° ! Victory at last !

Hahaha, man, I totally forgot I had exactly the same issue (just after transporting my PC) a few years back with the CPU fan, took me bloody ages to figure it out since it looked okay from a glance!

That corsair H50 is some good stuff. Prime95 doesn't even get it over 55° 60° anymore (35° idle).
