I agree with claws, stress your pc using prime95 or orthos prime. This doesnt use gfx and so may help you detemine whether cpu issue or more general psu / power issue.
I reckon psu just now, if i had to guess.

Also - as your PSU ages - the power it can supply will go down - just like a car.

I knew this, but this, in combination with Hzza's post about my possible power consumption just made me go "aha" in the 3rd degree.

See: I used to have only my faster Velociraptor C: HD, and 3 other, much older HD's. But in may I bought another 2TB HD, which possibly might have made my PSU (who was sufficient at the time) age faster...

So... theoretically, using Hzza's tool: Power consumption now: 692(I got 699 somehow) / with only fast 10000 rpm disk enabled: 582.

Even if it aged and let's say, lost about 30 Watts of its capacity, then this should work. Unless it allready lost over 100 Watts, which would be a little drastic to assume.

I'm definitely going to try this tonight.

Another bet on Dodgy PSU here, The watt calculators are rubbish, your comp wont be drawing any more than around 400W peak.


The Overclock checking tool (OCCT) is great for testing, you can test ram, cpu and gpu from the same app, or all at the same time in a special PSU stress mode.

Update. After running prime for over 10 minutes, I get CPU temperatures up to 99 degrees. 100 is the threshold. Will try to fix asap.

How have you managed to get an i7 that hot!?!? The only way I can imagine that would happen is it you didn't have a heatsink or cooler on it at all, or the fan wasn't spinning!

Well, come to think of it, mid june I installed a new motherboard. I remember having trouble getting the fan off the old one, and getting it onto the new one.

Chances are, I probably messed up with some of the connectors.

Sad thing is, to find out like this.

I think so yeah... was allready included on the stock fan.

Only took the fan away from the CPU once, then (probably badly) put it onto the new one.

Might be worth re-applying the thermal paste and re-seating the fan; I had a similar problem when I first built my rig (it never shut down, but the CPU was throttling itself to stop it asplodin') and new paste and new CPU fan sorted it.

edit - I'd also recomend looking at a couple of youtube videos on how to remove/apply thermal paste as there is a bit of an art to it. It's also a bit of a bastard to remove so I found seeing someone else do it really handy.

My search for Isopropyl Alcohol and lint free cloth to clean the old thermal paste off the processor and heat sink ended at the local medical supplies.  A box of 100 pre-injection swabs for a few pounds was job done although I think trying to explain to the assistant what I wanted them for might have been a mistake given the pitying looks I got - thankfully she didn't hand me a leaflet for NA.
