Since coming back from i40, all my Steam games have 150+ ping to all servers.

Other games like UT04, the ping is absolutely fine, standard <50 that I usually get. UT04 itself is fine even when run through Steam.

I haven't changed any settings apart from changing Steam location back to London again, I have even tried setting it back to Ireland (which it needed to be for i40 for some reason) but this has no effect on pings.

So at the moment, most of my games are completely unplayable, in particular TF2, so I'm currently stuck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are the pings high just in game?

Are they ok in the server browser?

Have you run a ping test? (Go to google and put in ping test)

Are they OK in the server browser out of game? (Right click on steam and click show servers)

They are high in game and in the browser, and the browser for all Steam game servers.

However at about 11:00pm tonight they settled down again to normal levels, very suddenly. I'm highly doubting that they'll stay low, so if they go up again tomorrow I will try pingtest etc.
Could just be a problem with Virgin locally.

Sounds more like a local Virgin Media thing to me. Do you have any other on-line games where you can test? I think Sammy has the right idea with a ping test tbh

I don't know if this concept exists as it does over here, but sometimes I get that when I'm put on "smallband" by my ISP.

This usually happens when we exceed our monthly data-transfer-limit, and - at least I - can't determine that with a pingtest, because it would give the same result.

Example:
Normal speed: 20Mpbs - ping 10ms to Amsterdam (good connection towards it for me)
Smallband speed: 1 or less Mbps - ping also 10 to Amsterdam.

What I usually do when I get this kind of thing is:
1) Run a http://speedtest.net/ (download speed, upload speed, ping included)
2) Restart router
3) Restart computer
4) Check if my computer's the only one in the network having trouble.
5) If that doesn't help, I reluctantly call my ISP's helpdesk.

I know I had that problem a couple of months ago, because we had almost no bandwith for 3 computers... We were just clogging up the line.

Yes some isps here do that naftman, bandwidth limiting, usually i've been put in a shit users group who basically have to share a limited pool of bandwidth as punishment, its a pretty shitty practice. Other ISPs do traffic shaping where they might leave your http traffic alone but start slowing down p2p and games and video streaming.

Looking at the server browser this afternoon, around 4-ish, things are absolutely fine. Perhaps it's some kind of evening busy-ness that's just emerged around here since I've been away.

I used to get bad pings between 5 and 11 on my old ISP because they throttled it at those times to stop everyone using the internet for casual use getting poop internet because of bandwidth fiends like us.

That's because you can't test bandwidth issues with a ping test.  Ping's are used to test latency (or overall connectivity).  You to use a speed test to measure bandwidth.

Imagine your PC is your house, and the game server is a pub.

Bandwidth is how many fat women that you have pulled, you can get through your front door every second.  Bigger front door = Higher Bandwidth = More fat woman per second = more data per second
Latency, is how long it takes to walk the fat women home pissed. Live close to the pub or have good roads on way = Low(er) latency

Is what happens when you get to your door with all of the fat women, and because of the size of your front door, you can't get them all in at once - so some have to wait outside and then they are no longer interested in the throws of passion so wander off and get lost.

Indeed, but like Brahms said: what about choke ? TF2 needs bandwith too, not an astronomical amount, but when you've been put on connection-pool-sharing or something similar, and he has other people doing normal internet surfing on his network, he could get lag sometimes.
It would account for the randomness of his problem (as seen last night).
Of course your point is a 100% right, no question about that, just trying to find the cause of the problem. Bad ping is the consequence.

Another posibility: (with lenghty description)
Internet in Belgium sucks, or used to suck for a while. While pretty much the whole of (Western, and most of Eastern) Europe had 20, 40, 80 Mbps connections allready, we were stuck with a shitty 3Mbps line.
Anyway, when they FINALLY upgraded the speeds/bandwiths, apparently they changed the DSL mode from normal (I forgot the real name) to interleaving.
You never notice this, as your router is supposed to take care of this automatically. Turns out my router was too old to handle this new type of mode, and interleaving increases latency slightly.
Result: I had trouble maintaining connections at peak hours somehow, when I got through to a technical operator, he told me my DSL-router/modem was working at 90% of it's capacity. So when I started TF2-ing, the poor thing came to a near meltdown.

Bought other router, problem solved.
