You can drive into london and park at one of the overnight car parks that have an overground station which connects right to the centre. For example you can park for 24 hours at Stanmore for £1 on a weekend or £2 on a weekday then get a day pass for the tube for around £6.

Or you can disregard London for the giant ugly slab of concrete that it is and partake in the English national pastime: Drinking and curry.

Don't listen to them. London's a city on par with New York and Tokyo. Coming to England and not visiting it would be foolish. Just don't exhaust yourself running around pointless tourist traps.

Really recommend you don't take a car into London.

If I'm visiting London then this is what I intend to do. (God forbid I should drive a car into London. I'm not made of money!)

The coast route (Dover -> Folkestone -> Hythe -> Rye -> Hastings -> Brighton) is really beautiful but slow, 3.5 - 4 hours to Brighton from Dover as opposed to 2 hours using the motorways (M20, M23, M25, M26).

We can make things easier for you and just gather in one place. Obviously I'd suggest Winchester, but I'm biased. That would mean you'd only have to visit one extra city instead of three.

Winchester's great, has a nice cathedral etc as does Salisbury which is really close too. I'd visit either of them over Basingstoke .

Plus a load of us live in/near Salisbury so we could show you what's what
