I remember when my old dog died at the vet after having a minor operation to remove a tooth, we went to go pick her up after the op and by the time we'd got there she had had a heart attack. We were both ok at the vet, then as we got into the car we were both very upset Sad Like your cat, it was pretty unexpected (she wasn't 'old') which I think made it worse... coming home and all the stuff is still there.
