There are some gadgets that can do that kind of thing on the desktop Teatime, I guess, tell us if you find one (Although I'll be using the taskbar shortcuts, or making Mac-like with everything at the bottom, haha!)

Oh yeah, indeed I found a gadget which serves my wishes to a high degree.
Launch Control
Highly customizable, looks nice, I have minor problems with drag'n'drop but I may be pushing the envelope with 8 groups  Grin, and most can be done manually as well.
Could have been a bit slimmer, but since I have a 16:10 display I don't care too much.

My hard drives fianly arrived. Although I'm a bit un-nerved by the lack of packaging. The drives were in bubble wrap bags, then left to slid around in their own box. The boxes in teun were then put into a larger box and piss porly secured. They should be alright, but the proof will be when I plug them in and start installing to them. Roll on thursday when I finaly get a day off. Fingers crossed for a painless install.

After a few days on Win7 I have to admit that my initial excitement has sobered up a bit.
Some of the changes are good, some okay, some irritating (which was to be expected). Most of I will get used to.
So far utterly frustrating I find the incarnation of the Windows Explorer. It is my understanding that a similar version has been used already in Vista, yet coming from XP I think this is a major step back from a decent file manager. Not that the XP version was that great, yet MS managed to make this version less capable (not to mention less customizable).
It has a few good points: Libraries are a useful addition and the use of the left pane in open/save dialogs is basically a good idea. However, the left pane is far too cramped (favourites, libraries, drive/folder-tree and other links), the explorer appears to be slower in response, folder with many files load/sort very slowly, the green bar (I still don't completely know what that is) is highly annoying, the status bar holds less information (especially it no longer shows free space).

/breathes deeply and resists the urge to return to XP

Guess I'll have to browse for some decent explorer replacement ...

PS: And I managed for the second time to accidently delete a folder because the right pane didn't show the content of the folder selected in the left pane (which is possible if you don't click the folders in the left pane, but move the selection with the arrow keys) Sad

I like explorer in Win7, think it's definitely improved over it's XP incarnation.
Got my sidebar customised with favorite folders, which is a big time saver, and I really like the address bar thing. "Recent Places" is a good feature too.
I have an SSD so folders with a bazillion files open instantly anyway, thus can't comment on relative performance.

It seems to remember my settings better than XP did and caches the position if you move 'back', both of which are big wins for me. It feels faster here too. The folder on the left is a pain though, especially with all the Documents/My Documents/etc confusion Sad

Well I'm now running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. So far increased the RAM to 8gb and I've only had to swap one drive. So my old XP drive is safely sitting in an anti static bag. All in all a very quick install. Around 25 minuets from blank drive to first glimps of the desk top.The update service also found drivers for my Razer mouse and Merc Stealth keyboard. Although I did have to go hunting for sound card drivers for my Sound blaster x-Fi.

The easy file transfer program was a very nice supprise. Worked very well and even gave me a list of all the software I need to go and find. So that saves some trouble. Still waiting on adobe to write a 64 bit version of flash player. Shouldn't be long.

I think this is going to take a little getting used to. So far I'm a happy man. Not completly blown away by win7, but I realy didn't have any expectations.
