Well, I'll still hold off because I just can't be bothered to erase my xp partition and install all my steam games again.

Does anyone else find it deeply deeply ironic that the backup facility provided with steam seems to take about as long as just downloading the games again?

You dont need to backup something, you can just copy paste the whole steam folder into another drive, everything will work fine. You just have to start steam with administrator rights once and then he will add a registryentry and youre done. Ive got my steamfolder for 2 years now.

BTW - Explorer crashes again after re-install.

Few people reporting the same thing - random error upon right click of a file, folder or icon (not a specific file etc).

I note that its not just the recycle bin - any right click and random crash (sometimes a crash, sometimes not)

I use the backup app on steam, but I backup my games individually rather than as 1 game, So I can pick and choose which ones I want on my smaller hard drive (seeing as I cant install some games on another drive and have steam find them)

I've seen enough of Win 7 to know that I like it, jump lists, new menus and general speed.

However, the point of trying the RC was a quick look at the OS, and I realise that its subject to further updates and fixes (despite being a release candidate).

Because I'm seeing instability, I'm returning to Vista 64, which has been nothing but stable for me now. The RC was worth it because I could try it all out.

I'll make the jump to Win 7 64 bit when its more mature, but definitely like what I see!

Lucky I have 2 hard drives - kept my old Vista install for easy switch back

I'm toying with the idea of upgrading from Win95 but I've only got 4 meg of ram so I'm still dithering about another 4meg upgrade - don't wanna get caught up in an endless upgrade cycle

I think Junta and Rippy are making the right move, although generally speaking it's in pretty good shape as it is.

@ 9, don't do it m8, u'll end up with a Quad Core and HD4870's in crossfire by the end of it all and not a big improvement in performance, it ain't worth it

preordered win7 professional yesterday at amazon.co.uk, because when I got home it wasn't available in Germany anymore....

I heard Amazon.de crushed and MS - Shop too and after 5 minutes it wasn't available anymore... Great work Microsoft!

Windows 95?  I can only dream of Windows 95, I still have to play TF2 in Windows 3.1, using ASCII graphics.  Maybe that's why I get those headshots, its easy to hit someone in the face with such a small resolution and when everyone has square heads.
