BBC radio app worked fine on my android phone when I tried it a few months ago, what wasn't working?

I definitely wouldn't switch my android phone for an iPhone, iOS is great for having a consistent UI across apps, but for power usage android just works better. I can change settings with less taps and I love having the little previews on the recent app overlay, I'm frequently using that to quickly reference info from notes or web pages when I'm working in another app.

IIRC correctly the iPad mini has a 1024x768 resolution, Android tablets in the same size category have significantly better screens (720p or 1080p) which makes a world of difference on web pages (you get more detail without having to zoom in) Coupled with the price difference rules it out for me.

App-wise I was rather dissatisfied with Android, but that's because of my terminal allergy of all things Google. It's fine if you use Gmail, give them all your Contacts and Calendars and in general aren't weirded out by the big G knowing your life to a very intimate degree. I for one have a private IMAP, Card/CalDav server (so I don't spend 60 monies at Apple, because I don't trust them either), and there was just no comfortably using any of that using non-paid (let alone stock) Android apps. And all of that works out-of-the-box on an iDevice. I haven't used iTunes much either, apart form getting my music onto the thing, and I find it's just bearable for that.

typing "belatinous cube" on an e-ink screen is going to be pretty torturous, no?
See my comment above yours. Totally agree.

True, which is the biggest grief I have with the iPad mini as well; I expect that to change next week though and hope for them to come out with a "Retina mini".

Well I ended up buying the new Nexus 7 and it is a thing of true beauty  Grin

Good timing as well, I bought it just as the BBC finally updated their iplayer app for android. After the lack of apps for my Palm pre (love my palm pre), the amount of stuff and proper branded apps I have for the Nexus feels more than enough.

The screen is superb, one of the major selling points of course. Text is crystal clear though the screen for the kindle app may be a little bright, they could have done with letting you turn down the whiteness.

It's also extremely quick. Using the browser, pages download almost immediately. The size is good, I can hold it easily in one hand. I've read criticism of the bevels at the top and bottom; it's been said they're too big, but I feel it just makes the device very easy to hold without getting fingers all over the screen.

I went for the 16Gb version in the end. I don't see myself putting much music/film/tv on it, or least not on a permanent basis. I haven't for any other device I have. And as I said games don't really interest me, I haven't touched any of the ones I've got on the Palm. I'm happy with my Facebook, Twitch TV, Steam apps etc. And my wallpaper apps. I've already got 4 of them downloaded. I love changing my wallpaper and looking at the photos to chose my next one. They look so good on the screen.

(you're right about having to sign your life to google though...)

Was worried about this myself, but was given a Kindle as a birthday present and haven't looked back. The sheer convenience of 'all books in one place' is worth it, and the reading experience is pretty good (actually prefer the original kindle over the paperlight in that respect since the touch screen annoys me).

Sure I can definitely see the convenience that it provides, but me personally at this juncture Im not in a situation ever where I would really benefit off it. When Im at uni and have to look up a publication or something similiar, my university has pdfs for everything in their library so I use my tiny netbook for that and when Im at home, I just rather have a real book with physical pages in my hand, its pure preference Tongue Im not the type that reads books on trips, I need it quiet and comfortable for that. I actually rather prefer audiobooks/podcasts on trips, Ive been listening to so many podcasts since I got my new job.

Also Im always super careful when carrying electronic devices around, my netbooks pretty much the only thing that I dont have in my pockets and Ive managed to shatter so many cellphone/other devices' screens before, I just dont feel comfortable having that thing with me all the time.

I think the cost of them also has a lot to do with it. I'd be pretty careful about with carrying a laptop, netbook, tablet, sweet ultrabook around as they're all over £150 so expensive to replace etc.

At €50 for an ebook reader that's pretty reasonable so if something happened to it it wouldn't be the end of the world (heck - that can be the price of just 2-3 books and if you lose them - you'd have to rebuy!). Combined with the fact you can still read on your phone, PC etc. etc.

!!

A tablet isn't the same as a palm pre berath. Theres a handful of stuff worth playing on tablets, like machinarium or sword and sworcery, osmos, and plants versus zombies. Just get the next humble android bundle that comes along and see if anything catches you. Its nowhere near being like a gameboy in terms of how much you would play with it, but nice to have a few good games just in case.

i want one now. i'm thinking either a note 10.1 2014 or an xperia Z. The xperia is playstation certed (+dualshock 3) and waterproof, with a less awkward UI and its rooted by now. but its from may so its only 1080p on a snapdragon with android 4.1. The note has a tegra 4 chip on a higher res 2560, with android 4.4, and the s-pen. touchwiz is bloaty but i dont mind it, think it hasnt been rooted just yet though and obv no waterproof or ps games. Both have usb host and IR comms which are my key features. I could nearly go for a tab but that has no USB host only IR.

Atm im thinking either wait for a sale on the xperia Z or wait for sony to announce the new version.
