Yeah, there are a lot of tables in those gaming manuals, plus maps, diagrams etc

e.g. http://www.chaosium.com/forms/coc_quick_start_bw.pdf

I was also thinking, we often use music and sound when running our games...this seems to say tablet as well.

It's one of those things where first you think, oh I'll just need it for x or y, then suddenly you start to think of a whole load of other stuff.

I'm still thinking Nexus. In the reviews it seems to do better than the Samsung, or at least the new Nexus does

For reading books I would buy the NOOK Simple Touch for £30 and then ponder how I could spend the extra £120+ (however not sure when it will be in stock again). For that price you don't worry about it when you are travelling (getting scratched/lost/stolen/wet).

If you want all the tablet features would probably go with the Nexus 7.

Pretty sure eink can deal fine with tables, it's refresh rate that it's poor at. I took my nook into town the other day by putting it in my back pocket and forgetting about it. Plus it only needs recharging once a month or two. For straight reading books nothing competes and they're so cheap that if you do a lot of reading you may as well buy one as well as an actual tablet.

If you need sound and music though then you need a proper tablet. And I think if you want to access reference materials than a proper tablet is better than e-ink as you'll want to jump around, input search terms etc. All a lot easier on a proper tablet. So get an iPad mini. Being on android feels enough second rate when you're on a phone, let alone when you're on a tablet which is the more nascent ecosystem.

no point in an ipad, just a premium for even less security and not a damn thing you can do about it. fluff nexus has sensor issues, its crap for games, I don't do much tablet gaming but i'd be annoyied if I couldn't.

Have a good section in the iPad mini recommendation on why you might want to get a Nexus instead, but unless you're desperate to save £70 I don't know why you'd go for the service with the weaker app ecosystem.

I've got a Kindle paperwhite, It's awesome for books, even with the backlight on it lasts for thousands of pages.

Tablet wise I'd go for the new nexus 7, or the old nexus 7 if I wanted to do it on a budget. Apps wise nowadays I'd say Android has the better selection, and at more attractive prices (at least for techy stuff, think iOS still has an edge in Games).

I've no desire to play games on a tablet. I've got games on my smartphone and I never touch them.

As for apps...well I've got a palm smartphone so re. apps...say no more  Cheesy

I'll take a look at both the mini and the nexus anyhow

Just get a nexus then berath. I'm not sure where brahms is getting the idea that android is a weaker ecosystem. Its so large all the major apps have to be on it, and if you want curated theres amazon. Third party and being able to develop your own apps is an advantage too. Unless you are desperate for hipster apps, or some of the games companies that refuse to multiplatform you wont miss anything.

e-ink is great for reading books - but I don't think they're so suitable if you want to read something that has pictures/graphics/colour etc. If all you want to do is read novels then absolutely go for one of those.

If, on the other hand, you want to trade battery life, price and some reading quality for a device that'll do just about anything reasonably well (music, full-coloured PDFs, games, web surfing, email etc. etc. etc.) then a tablet is definitely the way to go.

I think the odd table is fine too (seeing as Berath linked an RPG rulebook as example). Of course one wouldn't want to read schematics on those, or really anything that requires lots of panning and zooming. Pictures (as in, textbook illustrations) should be OK. For prose (as in, literature) it's perfect.

Of course if you're thinking Rulebook App with index and fulltext search, that practically screams tablet. Mind the battery runtime though.

I get it from using my phone. People are always talking about Android catching up, and it's nearly there in the phone department but there's still stuff it gets late, or doesn't get or gets the worst version of. Even on iPad there are apps that aren't optimised for tablet etc, which doesn't kill you but it's annoying. (Last app this happened to me for was the BBC radio app so it's not purely "hipster apps"  whatever they are) I can't see how the android tablet ecosystem is going to do better. Android is large, but on my phone at least, I'm always getting a copy of an iOS app, and it always does "sort of" the same thing but it's often worse and never better.

The difference between my phone and an iPhone was about £250 so I think the trade of was worth it. But the difference between an iPad mini and a nexus is £70 so I can't see the point in getting the thing that's slightly worse.

I don't have brand loyalty to anything, my phone is android, my pc is linux/windows. I've never personally owned an Apple product. My experience with tablets is my mom's iPad mini and my sister's Kindle Fire and some time spent on a nexus 7 at work.

I agreed with you r007 until I realised Berath probably wants to search through documents for references like "how much d6 does a belatinous cube do" and typing "belatinous cube" on an e-ink screen is going to be pretty torturous, no?

I don't think marginal lead time in apps counters stuff like being absolutely locked into stuff like itunes, total closed source, curator censorship, having to pay £60 a year for contacts sync, and the endless laundry list of apple faults that are too boring to list. Its a lazy persons OS, berath is not lazy. I'd probably rate a windows tablet higher than an ipad, sure its clunky but at least your apps would work on pc too i guess? Although the fact that the entirety of your microsoft account still only has a 16 char password is insane (or just short enough for certain people to crack without sweating).
