On the subejct of Windows 8, I'm going to install the release preview on a VM to have a look at it. If it's half decent to use I'll be upgrading through the only updater as the price point seems right. From my understanding they're basically aiming at cutting off OEM installs by offering upgrades and system builder editions for digital download on the cheap. I've seen quotes of $40 and for a Vista user, that's going to be too hard to turn down.

It was earlier than that, but I'm not sure why.

Ah yes, just remembered I have VMWare Player on my machine - installing Windows 8 now

Runs quite nice indeed on virtualbox, had a bit of play around with it. I have to say I'm not a fan of "search" outside of google - I'll be re-inserting the start bar. That's not to say it doesn't work, it also makes some things faster to locate, but it just doesn't feel right to me.

Metro will be very useful if app integration is picked up. I can see after a year or two, I'd actually use that UI for many things. Right now though, desktop is all I want and need.

However, if anyone is thinking about Windows 8, I really suggest you try it through virtualbox, it's a pretty nice experience for a test drive. Boots fast too considering. With the box set to run with 4 processors and 3 gig of ram, it takes about 17 seconds to boot.

I got 7 as soon as I could because XP had gotten shit by that point but vista just wasn't a good enough improvement.

I've always said this to myself: Microsoft are missing out by not selling thier OS at a price point people will be happy to take a chance on it being sub par (as they are with a game), and to justify the backwards and forwards of clean installs cheap is required.

If this price point for upgrades is correct (cost of a game) I'd be more than willing to upgrade each new version if it was comfortable to do so.

Having said that, as it's now plausible to install any OS you can get your hands on in a preview capacity with VM (hardware limitations were always a problem with this, but this seems to be moot right now) at least we're in a position to comfortably evaluate the heartache.

I bought Vista 64-bit when it first came out and I was generally very happy with it - it looked prettier than XP and on a machine with a decent spec so I was pretty happy with the upgrade. I had a few grumblings from moving from 32 to 64-bit because of drivers for some older hardware but that's to be expected.

I installed Win 8 last night on a VM and generally I was pretty pleased with it - I just wished they'd still left the start menu in it's original place. The metro interface isn't *that* bad - it's quite snappy but when you're there with your desktop it's much less usable than just clicking on the start menu. They could have made the improvements they've made (added Metro, boot times, some nice little UI/explorer tweaks) without forcing people to live without the start menu - which for everyone would be the suitable compromise.

I got a new Lenovo netbook a few weeks ago, so I just signed up for this. Supposedly Im going to get an email from them on the 26th with a discount code that I can use in their digital shop or to get it via retail for 14,99€. Pretty good deal, my uni doesnt give out any discounts for windows 8 sadly, so I guess thats the best deal I can get.

I also found out that apparently...Windows 8 keys can be used/converted to Windows 7 at no charge. Those of you that are thinking about buying a new laptop/PC but don't want Win 8 - I guess that's the option for you!

I installed Win 8 on a new SSD 2/3 weeks ago - I've been using it exclusively since then as my main OS and it takes a little while to get used to but then it's pretty much the same as Win 7 with a few nice features. There are a few annoyances still but you can get around those pretty easily.

The super quick boot times are awesome. The modern UI / Metro stuff - could be good but they messed up the implementation by making it feel disjointed from the desktop.
