Who's planning to early upgrade / switch to Win 8? Anyone tried out the RC and if so, what did you think about it?

I've just found that I can now get a copy of the Win 8 Pro (the full RTM version) for free, now (any students/faculty/staff that have access to dreamspark premium - the old MSDNAA should be able to get a copy too!) - I've downloaded it so I'll probably have a go at sticking it on a spare HDD for now to see what it's like - got way too much stuff on my drives atm to do a full reinstall and the reviews of it havn't been that great.

Then again, I went straight to Vista when that came out and I didn't really follow the whole "OMGOMGOMG THIS IS AWWWWFUL" mentality of what seemed like 95% of the rest of the world.

vista was shit. I am a bit sceptical about the whole windows store debacle. Although Mac OS has already one upped windows on that by straight up lying to you. Anything not from the mac store it tells you the file is broken and should be trashed. Because who could trust a mac user to know if a non mac store application is safe?

I don't think I will get it early but the new multi-monitor features in win8 are pimp, really want those. And in b4 ms gets sued for anti-competitive behaviour in the EU. (even though OSX Mountain Lion is worse about it).

Yup it's on MSDNAA.

I didn't like vista much too, but I liked how it managed audio devices. I'm glad they kept that in 7.

I'll probably upgrade pretty early. Been running Server 2012 on my server for a while and like it (not so keen on the changes to searching from the Start menu though, I use it all the time to get to files and settings shorcuts and now instead of just hitting Start, typing and pressing enter I have to use the mouse to choose if i want to search settings or files. It's an interuption to my workflow.

considering my hotmail just got hacked (admittedly because I was using one of their dumb security questions, but you have to use them so the only option is to put nonsense as the answer), skydrive potentially exposed all my files via its dumb file fetch thing, and you can't get in the metro store in win 8 without a hotmail live login, I think i'm going to wait for win8. Its disgusting that live still doesn't use a decent 2-factor like google, and non stupid security questions.

A PC pro editor tried hotmail earlier in the year and his password got cracked by the end of his week trial, and then they sent spam to everyone ever on his mailing list. I remember being cracked awhile ago and being used for spam which is when I put on a secure password (and insecure sec question).

I tried the dev preview and the RC and I will be staying with Win7. It seems more like proof of concept and designed for touch screen machines (which I won't be using).

I tend to follow the rule that microsoft release one good followed by one shit OS.

As a further to my hotmail is shit (and all windows stuff is on the same account system). Theres no log of recent activity (yahoo and gmail have) no 2 factor (same), account resets are easy, the security questions you have to choose are easy to guess if answered honestly, passwords are limited to 16 chars and no specials (yahoo 32, gmail 64). Also if a scammer adds a fake email address to your account it gets signed up to receive password reset emails, you can choose which emails to send the reset emails to only for some insane reason they get shortened to FIRSTNAME.....@DOMAIN.COM, so obviously the hacker just setup a dummy email that looked the same after microsoft thought they'd be clever and hide parts of the email. GG microsoft.

They keep saying on their blogs they are working on this stuff but they can get fucked until they do. Its too bad I really want the multiple monitor support but I don't think win8 is going to be good enough on release nor the account security.

I've had Windows 8 RTM (via my Technet subscription) running on my laptop for the last 10 days.

There's no doubting it has some very good features. Boot times are exceptionally fast, driver support is very good even on my old Toshiba laptop (only needed to install two drivers manually - Bluetooth and memory card reader), file transfers are much better with speed graphs and pause ability, Task Manager is much improved and I like the Live account login to keep settings synced via the cloud.

However, it really does need a touchscreen to be fully usable. The Start Menu UI is difficult to use with a mouse, there's too much dropping into Metro (or whatever it's called this week) apps and the Mail and calendar apps are buggy (Mail correctly recognised I have a Yahoo account as my Live login is my Yahoo address, but it spelled it as YHOO and the the app regularly crashes; Calendar doesn't even show anything from my Yahoo calendar even though it sees the account).

I suspect there will quite a few Windows updates before the full public release in October.

I did like the transfer speed graph and the improved task manager but they're essentially just minor gimmicks in an os which is not designed with gamers in mind.

The exception to the rule is Wiindows 2000 - although vista really isn't as awful as their bad OS's, like ME.

95 was good, beat the crap out of 3.1 (which was good in it's time)
98 was pretty crap until SE
2000 was great
ME was a steaming pile of crap
XP was good
Vista was good if you had a decent PC, far less BSOD's than XP
7 was a great evolution of Vista
8 is a good evolution of 7

I don't actually mind Metro with a mouse
