Hey guys, like the topic said, I am looking for a new notebook for my girlfriend. Lets talk money: 500-600€ is the price range.
We are looking for a i5 setting with 4-6gb and all that stuff. The Display should also be 'high def' -able, but I am not sure if we can get that in this price range. What we don't like: glossy displays and that shiny paintwork what they call over here 'Klavierlack' where you can see fingerprints and sh*t from 500 meters away.
I looked up an Acer Aspire Style 5755G-2454G50Mtrs, she didn't like it.
Now I am looking at a "Dell Inspirion 15r" looks pretty solid and costs about 570€ It has i5, 6gb ram, 640gb hdd, usb 3.0 and a lot of awesome features that I already forgot. But it looks promising...
Can you recommend Dell notebooks (service wise) or do you have good notebooks and want to tell me about them? It's really appreciated because exams aren't that far away and her old one broke down.
regards, Ringel

I had a Dell XPS a while back, it was awesome until it randomly stopped working one day about a year after the waranty ran out. Would buy again, stay away from Sony Vaio though, they feel cheaply made and come loaded up to the tits with bloatware.

Whilst in general I would tend to agree, it really does depend on what it is that you're buying. I bought an XPS m1710 in 2006 as a bonus treat to myself and it's still going strong. It's built like a tank. Some of the models were plagued by a fault introduced by a shonky nvidia gpu, with that avoided though there have been very few issues. In general Dell do have a rep, but when they get it right, they really do get it right. Same can be said for any manufacturer imo.

Dell's PCs are ok but their customer service is appaling. In the UK they use Indian call centres for everything. If you want to get technical you really want to speak to someone who actually speaks your language.

The one big plus for me with my laptop was they included the full Windows system disks. Often these days you just get some sort of restore disk.

The cooling on Dell laptops is awful, expect to have to take them apart to clean out the fan and reseat the heatsink a year or two down the line. Otherwise my experience with them has been fine once I uninstalled some of the bits and pieces that were pre-loaded.

The thing with Dell is that you can get a three year next business day on-site warranty for peanuts. That's why I always recommend them for Family members now. Things have gone wrong in the past, but they've always honoured the warranty and come out to fix it the next day .... way less hassle for me than having to fix it myself or organise an RMA that takes weeks to complete.
I use a Dell XPS Laptop myself and it's been fine for 4 years. I am a bit of a Lenovo/IBM fan though for outright build quality. Would avoid Asus/Acer from this perspective.

okay, dell is off the table. So is the i5 setup, because she wants to save money for vacation and stuff.. She told me she wants to use it for office applications and studying etc. NOT FOR GAMING.. a man can still dream, eh? Now its the intel p6200 cpu to save lots of money. the price range dropped heavily to 300-500€. Thanks for the Dell informations. Now its not really an option anymore. We are looking at Toshiba's and Acer's right now. I think we will find something suitable.

I’m using a Dell laptop for 4 years. It has never given any trouble and still runs like new. It still has the AC/charger/adapter and battery that came with it. I would highly recommend Dell, Toshiba, and Acer if you are looking for a reliable & durable notebook.
