Mmm, I'm not sure. This is certainly true in many cases, but I think there are exceptions that genuinely hold up.

With the addition of on-line multiplayer of course.

It's about the nearest a pc game ever came to Car Wars. A friend of mine had an ancient game of Car Wars knocking about, we played it to death!

Syndicate Wars too, though it probably wouldn't be as stand-out now as it was then. Or at least how stand-out I thought it was.

Really couldn't get into the X series, it seemed more like work than a game.  Preferred Freelancer far more despite it's lack of (comparative) depth.

Ever play Escape Velocity Milli? It's a mac game which is probably why its relatively unknown but my mate and I used to play it on emulators. Awesome fun.
I loved Freelancer/Starlancer too. The old Wing Commander games were good fun as well.
