Civ for me is less of the type of game I'm talking about - it's very much a strategy game on a huge scale as opposed to the tycoon/management games I'm talking about.

Still - it's a great turn based strategy game.

ARISE, THREAD.

Inspired by the RPS coverage, I've bought and have been playing a bit of Towns. My best go at summing up the final concept would be a cross between Evil Genius, Theme Hospital, Recettear and the obvious Dwarf Fortress; its USP is that you build the towns that heroes stay in while adventuring, with a dungeon full of beasties on the layers underground. You've got indirect control over your people through zones and orders, and the object is to juggle a functioning economy whilst pushing ever deeper into the dungeons below in search of tasty items.

It's currently in alpha (to the point where heroes haven't been implemented yet), and they're pulling a Minecraft style buy for 50% now and get all future builds free, making it about £8. Despite this I've probably sunk about 10 hours into it on this build alone, and it's scratching the itch I'd forgotten I had for this sort of game (that started this thread in the first place). Thoroughly recommended.

Bought the Alpha Bundle just in case the other two games turn out to be good too, so have a spare copy of Towns to throw to someone for free (or a Desura key if that's your sort of thing). First come first served, grab me on Steam doesn't work that way, apparently. However there is some kind of demo arrangement here.

3 things you need to know about the current Towns:

1) If you don't get food production up and running as a priority, you will be hunger locked within a fortnight. In practice this means:
- 8 wheat farms in a square with a mill in the middle
- 5 each of cow/pig farms, walled in (with a door, Brahms)
- Kitchen with about 4 butcher's tables
- Bakery with 4 bakery table and 4 baker's ovens
- Production rules set to maintain 5 steaks of each type at all times and however many meat pies you feel comfortable with (I usually insist on double the amount of people in my town)

Meat pies are the third most filling food and easily the most filling that doesn't require iron, so an ALL MEAT, ALL PIE diet is the way forward. Apples and pears won't cut it.

2) The AI is batshit retarded. Villagers have bizarre priorities (kind of fixed in the next update) and as mentioned will literally refuse to move if no food is available and they're hungry. Soldiers will fight everything they can get access to until they die or everything else dies, so the only way to save them if they're getting beaten up is to turn them back into a civilian and hope the bloodlust fades in time to stop them taking that final hit.

3) On that note, the best strategy I've found is to make sure everyone is armed to the teeth at all times (doesn't seem to affect work rate) and attack by ordering a big chunk of wall to be mined across from some enemies. The resulting wave of angry miners will pretty much slaughter any spider unlucky enough to be in the way.

Still enjoying this, although I'm now pushing down floors in search of iron and getting my ass kicked by goblins. So far each lump of iron has cost me the life of a villager, which isn't a great way to carry on.

Oh yeah. General raising of happiness, consisting of a) spare personal rooms to go around with bed and decor b) dining room built, with tables/chairs/decoration c) actually giving people some time free from tasks occasionally d) not too many deaths e) no starvation. It's pretty inconsistent but every so often the top bit will tell you that you've got immigrants. They're obvious in my towns by being the only ones not armed to the teeth.

Realised I hadn't posted it yet: the wiki is a pretty good guide to the underlying mechanics of the game.

I played through the tutorials and they were pretty fun - took me a while to figure out that you had to build doors on buildings and that it's not necessary to build an entire room (just a wall is sufficient) for a carpentry bench etc.

It looks promising. It's somewhat let down by the very alpha graphics (massively pixelated when you hover over icons) and the fact that despite completing the tutorial, I have no idea wtf is going on if I were to start a proper game.

The whole 'soldiers attack everything they meet until they die' was pretty annoying as well.

Will definitely follow progress and hope that the full version will satisfy my itch for more games like this.

In other news - I finished the main campaign of Tropico 4 in the last couple of weeks - an excellent game. The more objective based campaign missions stopped it from ending up like a lot of similar games where you get a decent economy, rolling in the money, everyone is happy and you just have to sit and wait for the objective to complete.

I want to wait for Anno 2070 to be cheapy cheap so I can see what that's like.

In the same boat as deadly. Also slightly worried about how fiddly equiping people is. Surely you'd go nuts trying to individually equip each soldier once your village gets to a decent size.
