When I was growing up I used to love games such as the following:
Sim City
Sim Ant
Sim Tower
Transport Tycoon
Theme Hospital
Theme Park
Rollercoaster Tycoon
Tropico
The Sims (only the original for me)
Black and White

Where are they now?
As far as I know, the only thing that comes close these days is Tropico 3 or OpenTTD.

I love the whole business/tycoon/sim games.

The selection on steam looks absolutely abysmal with things like hospital tycoon, prison tycoon etc. which sound like they should fit the bill - except for the fact they looks like they're aimed at little kids or just look plain awful.

1) Why is this?
2) Are there any other games that might fulfil my desire to play a sim/tycoon game?

Just something for discussion - I'm sure there are others that must have the same nostalgia etc. for these games.

During my childhood when I started playing videogames I - for some reason - loved financial sims and theres one Ill never forget which is up to this point one of my favourite sims ever: "Der Planer"

I remember playing this when I was 7, 8 years old, not understanding alot about companys and how to run them but it was mad fun because of all the random events happening throughout the game. Unfortunately theres no english version of it as far as I know.

Another one I remembered playing alot is "Chartbuster" but is pretty unknown (also no englisch version of it as far as I know, its full of german music stereotypes anyway)

Also "Theme Hospital", played that alot with my brother.

freakin loved Transport Tycoon and Rollercoaster tycoon. Used to play Theme Hospital too with my sister.

Also liked the 2d space exploration/trading games like Escape Velocity

Evil Genius is a pretty good management game if you can cope with glacial slowness at times. It's old, but it's cheap on steam.

i gotta say no chug. I love it but its fundamentally broken as a fun thing, you just never have the manpower to carry out your missions and defend your base. I really wish games like these would see more modding though because just making the hotel earn cash would turn the game on its head. One of the most useless parts of the game would become the most useful and you would have an extra lifeline for cash at those times when the super bastards are busy dog piling your base and murdering every single employee you have. It also could use random maps maybe or some other game mode i dunno, as I understand it the developer were suffering financially and went under and just couldn't afford to finish development which is ashame because a little bit of extra polish, some tweaking and more game testing for a few months would have put it on a par with dungeon keeper.

why u no mention dk and settlers?

dk isn't particularly hardcore with its management but i'd place it in the same area of gaming. Also I used to play beasts and bumpkins, still not finished that game, its brutal because theres no solid tutorial phases and you just get the next game features dumped on you and you are expected to go off and win. Beasts and bumpkins is like dk and knights and merchants and settlers etc except the management can be a lot trickier. you basically have a town of smelly disease ridden peasants and your primary goal is to get them fed and watered and provide enough housing so that if you are lucky they will randomly decide to start making babies (FANCY SOME NOOKIE! the voice lines are hilarious), they also get old and die. all the while monsters will be roaming around and usually make assaults on your smelly peasants at night time, and other villages of smelly peasants may also try to wipe you out. It takes quite awhile to get setup in town to have enough manpower to mount little expeditions to achieve your objectives but its worth it, building up a standing army is an achievement in itself. Your smelly peasants can join a guild but the warrior type guilds preclude them from child rearing and natural aging giving rise to one of the main balancing acts do you need more mean dudes with maces or more babies? It gets more complex slowly over the levels I still haven't finished it. This is another great little old game that I wish was open source it can be very fun and has potential if only it was modernised a little and feature bloated like good old ttd. I also got pretty far into the game and never understood all the sliders for management types, you could micromanage the price of bread and eggs and the punishments for crimes and stuff.

EDIT:quick little addendum evil genius is great in the early stages it works for awhile. It makes you suffer in the end phases when you'll routinely get 2-3 superagents show up or worse, you'll have 2-3 in jail probably in a cell too deep in your base and then another will show up and break them all out of jail and make you cry as your whole base melts down and your last 2 guards who survived 3 superagents realise a 4th is coming and save themselves the trouble by shooting each other.

Oh yeah, it's pretty damn hard. By the end if you don't have a pretty vicious trap system in place and the majority of the super agents dealt with (in both the times I completed it I had John Steele locked in a room with two mutants purely tasked with sitting him down whenever he escaped) then it's near impossible to beat.

Also, Sims 3 is excellent, can recommend the legacy challenge for a bit more of an objective (will track down a link when I'm not on my phone).

its tooo hard. I'm pretty sure they backed out of the hotel making money, I long for the day if ever its opened sourced and we can add money making hotels (with management tweaking ofc) and some kind of evil business empire you can run as a background management sim to bring in those legit dollas. We all know real evil geniuses reinvest and carve an evil corporate empire based on fruit iconography.
