Ok, a new day and only 56 more files to record. Then the long process of trimming and adding echo to each file, one by one.

Is it a sign of madness that I'm laughing at my own recordings?

A quick little blast against the bots and out of the 34 files that I have done, I think all bar the "2 minuets till end of game warning" work.

That prompt only works on Coldfront, iirc.

It's more a lack of relays/commands on the mapping side of things than anything wrong on your part, however.

I do, however, look forward to some other source game material:
- L4D voice-overs?
- Even a Ripshaw Personality core in Portal?
- Or (the non-source game suggestion, but still the best) a Ripshaw co-driver for DIRT 3. Smiley

Right. Finally recorded all the sounds that I've got a listing for. And thankfully the count ins and count downs are already done. So only 150 ish files to play with.

Time for a quick break and then some tinkering. If I'm lucky I'll hopefully have this done in time for Frag Fest. Fingers crossed.

Ok, not quite sure what is going on.

According to the spreadsheet there should be a 169 different sounds files. I've just checked and I have 163. So I've got 6 files that I've missed. Unfortunatly it's all becoming a blur. So coupled with dyslexia, they could be anywhere.

But enough of that Smiley

The rest have been tinkers and fettered. And they can be got from the following...
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0BwoMds93-O8RZTZlYTJjN2MtNjRkMi00NGMwLWIwODEtNTdjNGRhNDU2Mzg2&hl=en_GB

As before, simply download and extract to the "vo" folder. Hopefully they will all work, but I can't say for sure. I may have made a spelling mistake with the file names. Or they may just not work. Who knows?

But above all. Use at your own risk Smiley

I'm not paying for your therapy.

They're great, awesome even. Still, Dynamic Compression wouldn't have hurt. Cheesy

Alright, alright, I'll explain. You know how news presenters have that very even, monotone, droning voice? That's a compressor at work. It makes the loud parts quieter, and then boosts everything back up to normal volume; giving the result that the volume, or, as the sciency types call it, dynamics, does not vary that much any more; that is, it's been compressed.

Almost every audio software has that... Could you go and have a look for it?

I'll certainly give it a try. There's loads of buttons in the audacity program. I was only using about 3 or 4 of them Smiley

Edit: where do I put these files?  Huh?

You will need to make a new folder called "vo". Here's an example of the full path:

C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\[your account name]\team fortress 2\tf\sounds\vo

Or to put it another way, you will need to make a new folder called "vo" in the sounds folder of the game.

Ok, so far it's a mixed bag. Some sounds are working, others are not. So count downs and count ins are ok. Yet victory & defeat aren't. I'm sure there's an expiation somewhere. I just don't know what or where Smiley

Well it's still a mixed bag, as far as results go.

First up, big huge thank you for all of you who have braved the download. Let alone listened to them all. Also big thanks for the behind the scenes tinkering required to get the sound files to work on the server.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I still can't understand why the sound files will some times work, and then other times won't. It can even be an anomaly that happens on the current map. At the moment I've no idea as to why it's this random. Actually on reflection it's probably quite apt considering I am something of a random individual.

For my next trick, finding the audio compression options.

Wish me luck Smiley

They seem to work fine for me, my only niggle is that they can be very quiet alot of the time (dunno if that's just me), so it just kinda gets lost in the sounds of explosions etc Tongue

Arrrr! Then r00t was right all along.

By the power of Google I got this...

"Compressor - compresses the dynamic range of the selection so that the loud parts are softer while keeping the volume of the soft parts the same. You can optionally normalise the recording afterwards, resulting in the entire piece having higher perceived volume."

From this...

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/onlinehelp-1.2/reference.html

So I'm going to make a quick backup of the recordings before I start and have a tinker. I'll see if a little DB boost helps. may be play back an original game file and see what levels that comes through at.
