And the characters? How are they? Good backstories and interactions with each other or are they all Generic Mage 1, Healer 1, Dwarf 1 tropes?

I am not that far that I know much of the backstories.
First impression is that most of them are allright.
The porn-dwarf is pretty funny.

Still not as brilliant as Alistair/Morrigan/Orlean assasin whatsherface, but not too bad.
I think there will be backgroundstory quests, but the info around the charactes is still thin.
They interact like in Origins with some dialogues and sometimes you can ask their oppinion on quests but there isn't any Alistair/Morrigan-like rivalry.
The main char and his family is a good story, but I won't spoil it.

Archers are far more useful now. I play as rogue and have one tank, one mage and one archer/another mage. Works pretty good. Haven't figured out how cross-class-combos work, but maybe I'll find out soon.

I also should point out that it's crucial to play Origins before. Not storywise but for the sake of the whole game experiance.
It seems like they take the knowledge you should have of the world for granted.
They don't explain much of the feuds between different fractions like elvens & humans or templars & mages.
Maybe it's in the codex, but seriously.. who reads that?

I actually really like some the characters. Varric the Dwarf is like the story teller of your character, and always in my party mostly due to the interactions. Quite cool backstories to them with fun little quests attached.

Unfortunately some of the characters have taken the road down the dark and moody path, and the most badass tank character is, well, a whiney bastard. Voiced by Balthier though so sometimes I pretend he's not a pretty boy with a side parting but a cool sky pirate instead.

I'm rolling with the same party set up as Ringel and yeah it's working out pretty good. Ranged guy is a definite must I'm finding, partially for the lulz.
