I just managed to crack the uni's firewall using HTTP tunneling and Proxifier, atm only got it configured to run WoW.

So here's my question: Can anyone with experience on this sort of thing give me a hand configuring it so TF2 runs?

Anyone happen to know the same sort of proceedure only so it works with TF2?

Urg, tbh would be a lot of work...depends mainly on what ports your uni firewall blocks. If it is server connections...hmm...might be tough.

I'll take another gander when I have a bit more time perhaps.

Might not be worth it dude, Uni's get pissy about these sorts of things, might even result in some kind of ban.

No WoW or TF2? Harsh. Sockscap / Proxifier could be tricky, you'd need to have both steam and TF2 configured.

I used these guys - http://www.your-freedom.net/ - for tunnel services when I was at uni, They have a VPN service now which'll work with everything without hassle. A VPN seamlessly integrates like another network connection.

The 64Kb/s free service isn't really great for gaming on nowadays, but the 256Kb/s service would be, and for less than £10 a semester is totally worth it for the convenience. Latencies are likely to be lower than tunnelling to your home connection and you won't be using your home bandwidth.

Uni's won't do squat unless you do something to get noticed. With a VPN (or any other tunnel) you're safe from the Uni getting sent any copyright violation notices, so all that's left is to try not to download a massive amount (like hundreds of GB) because they can and will track down people adversely affecting the network. Gaming will be absolutely fine.

My guesstimate would be that tf2 is rather unplayable with that setup. (Might depend on your other end of the tunnel though...)

Also I wonder why they hard-code the WoW logon servers? Do they want to capture your passwords? (tbh I cba to compare them with the original adresses)

How do you think unofficial servers do authentication, eh? No such thing as a certificate-based sign-on.

To be fair they probably only transmit a hash, but that may be sufficient for stealing all your monies.

I was a Student Rep during my Uni years and I can honestly say, apart from losing a couple of Wednesday afternoons to meetings and such (like 4-5 an academic year) I can honestly say I did bugger all. Maybe the odd "comment", but that was it.

In short, bother your student reps about it -- it'll give 'em something to do -- particularly if this is halls of residence internet we are talking about here.

True - but how many people in your halls use websites like tv catchup or download lots of files? That's much more demanding on the network than gaming which is fairly low bandwidth.

I agree forcing the resolution is very weird, nothing else in the tutorial references them, I would definitely say this is suspicious behavior, I would do the rest but not this bit, very very sus.

Its all about the ports, find the ports tf2 runs on and do the same procedure with that port, should work?  Failing that look into SSH tunnels, very efficient, and some firewalls leave port 22 open as its for management.. and not games   Just got to have a fast server to use as a SSH server.

Could use DNS tunneling, but not sure thats advisable.
