Torrents are definitely trouble, put a massive amount of strain on a universities routers thanks to NAT. If the world had moved on to IPv6 it wouldn't be a problem but that's not the case.
Surprisingly there aren't that many people torrenting though, Majority of the ignorant masses use shit like Limewire.

Personally, I <3 Usenet, maximum speeds, and it all goes over port 80 or 443.

limewire is massively responsible for pissing off a lot of unis, anyone with brains enough to figure out torrents usually figures out how to shut them off, limewire uploads constantly and spreads viruses pretty easily both of which massively annoy the uni.

The old its for academic use only line is bullshit when its being provided in halls of residence, you should raise it with your student reps and give tony a severe migraine of angry students. At least you will have something to do at uni between all the boozing and not playing tf2 and those naptimes where some dude yaps at you. all Unis use JANET as their 'ISP' and plenty of unis do allow games and even downloading to a degree, any its only for academic nonsense is the uni imposing upon you not the isp. Maybe their infrastructure is too shitty to handle high use but then wtf are they spending your fees on? I know my uni spends it on the bureaucrats building which is brand fucking new and made of glass and then they redid the surrounding square and building because they want the view out the window to look nice and the roads to their underground PRIVATE fucking car park to be nice but still, fuck them man.

Well that your-freedom doesn't seem to work (well it might do, im not sure - I have to download a shitload of other programmes all of which I don't have a clue how to operate), im so confused http tunneling still seems like the best option, but other than that, im out of ideas.

I can't emphasise how strongly I recommend the talking to student reps and getting things changed option first! Using tunnelling and similar is exactly the sort of thing they will pounce upon, and it's better for you to not be able to play TF2 than not have internet access at all.

I expect there's nothing in the student agreement that gives them the right to the content of encrypted traffic, provided their network is not being used for illegal purposes.


Anyway, I've done a bit of reading and it looks like Steam games, as of last year, can no longer be proxified and used over an http tunnel. Just follow the guides and read the forum on your-freedom - a VPN is the best overall solution.

It's not what you're using it for, it's that you're subverting their controls at all. You can browse journals without tunnelling, as far as they're concerned you can do anything you may have need to do without tunnelling for that matter, and therefore if you are it must be something they wish to prevent by their logic.

The system sucks, but there is a system. Don't give them ammo to be even more draconian than they already are.

It's not what you're using it for, it's that you're subverting their controls at all. If they pick up on it, they'll probably assume you're "subverting", but the burden of proof is still on them to show that you are actually subverting their contract. There's nothing illegal about encrypting your data, and you don't need to justify your use of it to anyone, no more than when you send letters instead of postcards.

Before too long, everything will be encrypted by default, there's no reason any of your data needs to be visible. This is why the US, despite massive lobbying by groups like the MCAA and the RIAA, hasn't put in any kind of "three strikes" law. Putting in the law will cause a massive surge in encryption, to the point where it is normal to have all your data encrypted. And then they can't spy on people.

This was my original point, so long as using a VPN isn't banned in the terms of usage that you signed, you aren't violating any terms of the contract.
