At home, the family Linksys' router-modem stopped working. As far as I can see it's still OK as a router though. Either way, instead we're using the rubbishy modem talk talk sent us. The problem is that it only has a single ethernet port.

Can I use the linksys to share the connection via ethernet?

I don't have any experience with single port devices like that, however if its single port ethernet, I would imaging (guess) it still uses a different IP for device and PC... which would mean you could plug it into a switch/hub... i.e. you could use the talk talk device as the modem, and the linksys as the WAP and multiport device.

However its possible it just routes traffic through and your PC has the public IP... if thats the case you would have to have the PC that plugs into it as a router & PC, so would need two network interfaces.... getting a bit messy

If the linksys was a modem-router, I'm guessing that it only supports routing between the RJ11 ADSL interface and the RJ45 switch ports on the ethernet interface, the part that is working now is the Switch aspect. You'll either need a "Cable" home router, which can route between two ethernet interfaces, or another all in one modem router.

plugging the adsl modem into your existing switch (the ethernet ports on your Linksys) won't work, It'll want to pass the public IP address your ISP gives you along to a computer over DHCP, so you'll end up with weird things going on when multiple computers and another DHCP server are all in the same broadcast domain, like computers randomly getting and losing the public IP address and net access  (and tons of trojans/viruses etc if you don't have a firewall up on the PC).

Look up and see if you can put custom firmwares on it, or see if there are firmware profiles that do it.

CBA ATM TBH DA, I'm only here on the ocassional weekend, I can just use wireless if I'm desperately trying to get my other compy on the network. Custom firmware might be a fun project some time though.

If you've got an old pc lying around, you can build your own router. Just put an extra network card in and install Smoothwall or IPCOP. It's very easy, only takes 10-15 mins to get running and any old piece of crap PC will do, I use a 500MHz AMD K6-2 with 512 RAM and it's total overkill.

Linksys devices are usually fairly capable even with stock firmware. I'd give it a whirl, often you can designate one LAN port as the uplink port, say for using an ADSL router with a cable box. (Or an external ADSL box, in your case...)
