Hi all,
I tried to solve this problem alone, without success Undecided . So I thought I could make a thread about it... Any help is appreciated  Smiley

Well, my computer crashes when I play TF2. A few seconds after joining a server and spawning, the screen goes black and the sound stutters. Task manager fails to show up, and playing in windowed mode doesn't help either, so I guess the whole computer is locked up.

So far I've tried to clean the video card (it was covered in dust!), and to update and downgrade the drivers aswell. I managed to play half an hour with the latest nvidia drivers, but then the computer started to crash again.

Here are the specs:
motherboard: MSI K9AGM2-L
video card: 8500GT
RAM: 1024mo DDR2 667mhz
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+

Now, I have an embedded Radeon X1200 on my motherboard. If I play TF2 using this one, the PC doesn't crash (but the performances are beyond terrible Undecided ). I hope that doesn't mean my 8500gt is fried, because I can't afford buying a new card right now  Sad

Is it *only* in TF2 - or in other games as well? (Or at least high-powered games?)

Could be that something is overheating, or maybe it's related to your power supply?

I have a Radeon X300.. Performance is beyond beyond terrible, but I live with it. ,)
Try to download a temperature monitor program, and watch the progress when playing TF2(with the 8500GT). Currently my GPU is 70-75 degrees, when playing.

Definitely sounds like your graphics card is overheating.  Try using it with the case sides off, make sure the fan isn't hitting any wires and is totally free of dust (and not missing any fins) and try and underclock the card if possible.

If that fails try a new fan in the card, if that fails get a new card.

Well, I've been using this card for quite some time now and it never overheated during summer. Moreover, it used to be on the second floor, and it's quite hot there during summer, so I moved it for the first time to the first floor a week ago. I find it a bit strange that it overheats in a colder place.

Well don't forget the overall aging of the card. Thermal paste could be going a bit, for example

Also: PSU stuff changes over time, and heat can accellerate that.

Hi,

Eactly what model is your GFX card?

I had that exact problem on an 8800 Ultra.  That died eventually and I replaced it with an ATI 5870...guess what same problem.

I solved it by reverting the clock speeds back to defaults for the chipset (thanks doomie Smiley)

Basically under vista/7 thefactory overclocked cards do not play nice with games, if you underclock them they will work fine

I think the card comes from MSI... It's not overclocked. I'm using Windows XP by the way

I played some hours of burnout and TF2 without crash after cleaning the card a second time (still, I had already cleaned it completely... odd). But tonight it's starting to crash again.

I noticed all crashes happen when the video card temperature reaches 65 degrees, so I'm actually trying to put the fan to maximum speed with rivatuner.

Now, I would like to show something I noticed when I cleaned the card for a second time. Look at the group of 3 capacitors on this picture of my video card taken by my cheap cellphone.

i think sonic needs to give the thumbs down to this one. If the capacitors are gone either you need to get all badass and replace them which is difficult or get a new card.
