6Gb is SATA3 but I mean it should work fine you'll just get the SATA2 speed of 3Gb

So will using a different SATA type negate the point of having the OS on a SSD or will it not make much difference?

SATA is backwards and forwards compatible.

But even the 3Gb/s one is still much much much greater than the maximum speed of an SSD which is about 200-300 Mb/s so the SATA speed is much greater than the drive speed - so you'll have no issues!

Won't make much difference, It's still a very fast drive, and the only SATA3 SSD at this time. On SATA 2 it's limited to about 270MB/s sequential reads, if you have SATA3 that goes up to 350.

I didn't want to make a new thread and blatently offend Cruel so thought I'd necro this one! WD Caviar drives; whats the difference between green, blue and black? Is it green = less power use, blue = standard, black = superquick? Finally ordering the TB internal (if the fucking OCUK site ever works again -_-).

Tempted by a 120GB OCZ Vertex 2E http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-060-OC but it doesn't seem big enough to take my entire steam folder which is currently at 81 Gb.  A quick google suggests that symbolic links are the way to go, keeping TF2 and a few others on the SSD and relegating the rest to my Raid Array (10 - never had any problems, 1 harddisk failure dealt with painlessly Smiley).

Has anyone any experience using windows 7 mklink command to split their steam folder over 2 or more drives?

Thanks.

I have TF2 on my SSD via symlinks, I used a program to do it though. Deadly might be able to tell you what it's called since he pointed me to it in the first place.

Sorry dude, you've made a poor choice. That's the SNV425 model, based on Jmicron 618, which although not catastrophic like the SNV125, is a pretty poor SSD with abysmal random writes. The SNV325 model is pretty good, just to make things confusing.

For £1.64 more you could have had one of these - http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductID=1231629 - Vertex 2E 60GB (same formatted space as the 64GB kingston). The Vertex 2E is a far better drive.

Comparison here - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/152?vs=154

mklink is very easy to use. Install steam to your SSD and then move the game folders to your Mechanical drive. make a link by doing
Code:
mklink /d C:\prog files\steam\steamapps\common\gamename E:\steam games backup folder\gamename

By the way, for anyone thinking of going SSD RAID, Intel's beta RST drivers apparently support TRIM on RAIDed SSD's now, even if they don't, benchmarks are showing big improvements. I'm waiting for official release before I try them myself though.

Wink Cheers, but I was actually fully aware of the limitations of the Kingston device - I merely point out that I was able to get it (with free delivery) for a bargain price. The device (when compared to my HDD) is still superior.

The OCZ is £106.33 Inc VAT + delivery. A good price for sure, but I paid £76 INC VAT for the Kingston with free delivery. I do see now that Ebuyer have shot the price up to £100 inc vat, so no, I'd not buy it again at that price! For £76 though... couldn't resist!

At the time I posted the link above, the Kingston was still £76. I agree that it's not worth spending £100 when the price differential with other devices doesn't justify it.

PS. If the Kingston is abysmally bad, then I know that e-buyer are pretty good on their returns policy. I've returned goods before under the "not of the quality I expected" heading and they've been more than fair on every occasion.. unlike other suppliers I could mention.

aquila; I do that. Someone recommended Junction Link Magic, which works fine. http://www.rekenwonder.com/linkmagic.htm

Steps to move a folder (you can potentially do files too, but the only big file based ones I have are Left4Dead 2 and TF2);

- Exit Steam
- Move folder from the Steam folder (mine is D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\XXX ) to the other hard drive.
- Create a blank folder in the Steam folder of the same name
- Link the folders in Junction Link Magic.
- Load Steam

No problems here to report; you can tell it works since the folder basically acts like a internal shortcut - even with an icon to represent it Smiley neat stuff.
