It breaks most of the defensive classes and favours offense so can't really agree. Playing heavy is infinitely more fun when you have a cart to play with or a briefcase to hug.
You  can also say that the scout is broken on A/D maps as he gets spammed into oblivion or that the engie is broken on 5 point maps as he can't keep up with the pace of the maps.

There is no "better" or "worse" maps, only playstyles and class choices and as these are subjective to what/how you prefer to play, arguing over which map type is better is stupid.

I agree entirely (wtf?? lol) I didn't want to start a map debate when I started this, just that 5cp maps are crap for engi, and the the other classes i play.

However, on any given night on WDG the vast majority of maps are 5cp... so I often leave and visit gtfo to get some variation.

Not that the maprotation or voting is at fault, just that you all love them much more than i lol

Personally I don't have much respect for throw-away sentries.
I agree that it gets harder and harder to raise a sg to maturity these days, and they don't last very long (unless the engy has huge help from his teammates), so more flexibility is probably good advice.

However (you saw that coming, right?)
I dislike random placement of sentries just for the purpose to get a kill (usually just *1* single surprise kill and then it's gone) and no thought about the overall purpose of a sentry, which after all should be slow enemies down (area denial seems to be too big a word these days, though it is still valid). It should force the enemy to adjust their tactics, should force them to waste time and energy on an object rather than on the own team or the map's goal. Throw-aways don't serve that purpose.

And lately I see too much thoughtlessness in sentry placements which often enough prove to be completely ineffective, not rarely to a degree that I felt the engy would have been more effective as heavy or medic. (And I won't even start on the topic of 'shared intelligence' which is still much present with multiple engies).

It's a bit like a bad spy who's just picking random targets (probably easy ones) instead of prioritizing targets to make himself more effective. But even such a spy can still instill some paranoia. Throw-aways on the other hand are hardly more than minor obstacles.

Having said all that: The major advantage of throw-aways are the breaking of predictability (which, for example, is my flaw: I'm way too predictable). IMO a good engy will try to create a good mix of both. More flexibility, more change, but always with purpose.

When playing any class in TF2 you have to ask yourself what is the objective of that map.  Everything you do should be to that goal.  Don't stick a sentry in a backwater where you have no chance of defending a point, however many kills you think you may get.

With the offensive engineer playstyle the idea on a 5 point map is to stay up with the main push and try and build a sentry overlooking the mid point before it's capped.  When it works it's very effective.

The primary objective though is to have fun and with my new philosophy I have been, mostly.

I've been thinking about a possible sentry design - the pyro ... has flamethrower and reflect capability so it's effectively immune to explosives, and forces the enemy team to take it out with bullets / shottys from mid range.

You may say it's unfair to solys/demos, but tbh "Fuck 'em". The sheer numbers of solly/demo employed nowadays coupled with experience gained over the past 3? years is letting them roll over conventional emplacements.

However I fail to see the gain compared to the normal sentry? Why push when you can kill them? Also the normal sentry is already a pretty good pusher. And making the water cannon an a lot better pusher could completely ruin übers :/

I'm sure they would, but that's why voting is there and It works. If everyone on the server want badlands for the third time in a night after just playing well and granary, that's fair enough. No point in emptying the server for my bad taste in maps lol

I'm actually into ctr maps at the minute gorge and harvest in particular Smiley I'm wierd lol
