It is getting increasingly harder on our server to get kills with a sentry.  The role of engie seems to be a support one, putting up teleports and dispensers.  This may be worthy but it's not much fun.

I can't remember when I killed more than one of the WDG or regs with the same sentry.  So my strategy will now change to sticking disposable level 1s where people least expect them and joining in the general melee.

I expect to die lots but that is nothing new.  I just hope I take a few scouts with me.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

To be honest I've always found your sentry positions excellent and have used them over and over again. Especially the ones on the first point of Goldrush - so annoying! Cheesy

But I agree - sentries seem to be taken down as soon as they're put up nowadays and only seem to work as a deterrent. If you're looking for more kills your new tactic seems to be the way forward. Either that or you pay a pyro to babysit your level 3 sentry 24/7 Smiley

It seems that the more exotic placements win, or locations where multiple sentries have interlocking fields of fire.

Enfilade fire (or "flanking fire" to you and I) works well too - on maps where people are facing in one direction but get SG fire from the side or rear.

Basically, the SG is dead if someone can easily see it ahead of them. Well, tbh, most SG's are dead without help anyway these days (demo men and soldiers doing the main take downs).

I also find that anytime a sentry can fire on jumping targets is good as well, once you take a hit mid-air you get pushed back (even when ubered of course).

At the moment I think teams of engineers are needed, with other offensive buddies to stay and help out. I've taken to standing in front of friendly sentry guns from time to time if they start to take critical damage. Difficult to pull off sometimes if the engineer is dead, but can help massively. A Heavy meat shield can help!

It's been like this way for ages. Engie is broken since almost every other classes has been buffed. Engie only works for tp's or corridor maps like DB 3 which are near impossible to take if you turtle properly.

try a new class until the engi update? any new strategies are only going to need rethinking soon anyway. TF2 class updates come approx every 3-4 months, i forget how long its been since war but its getting time for engi

EDIT: more like 3-6, but its been 4 since WAR, so i'm expecting it to happen before the end of June

When I do engy, I actually focus on the teleporters and dispensers as the main thing I'm useful for.

The sentry actually does two things 1) attracts spies to attack it and b) discourages people from attacking the teleporter.

Maybe this explains my poor showing as an engineer, but I don't play the class to get kills tbh Sad Sad but true

Something I like doing as demo or solly is to put a stickie/rocket and the demos feet.. it only pops him in the air a tiny amount but the sentry fire sends him flying back! Bit of prediction is needed and it doesnt work on the good demomen because they'll have taken the SG down before you've noticed

Whip that shotgun out and use it to support your sentry, you'll be surprised how powerful the thing is. Especially as most players will scoff at the sight of an engi charging towards them, two meatshots later and they're dead. Failing that, communication is your best weapon - you gotta be quick with telling your team where people are who are killing your sentrys. Tbh if an uber is coming in, you may as well start running to setup another sentry; I sometimes find running round a corner while the uber kills your sentry and then running back and start building it in the same place works quite well. After the uber has destroyed the sentry, they will usually go hunting for some kills and ignore you. Of course if they have decent backup you can forget that.

Last night on gpit I gave up trying to get a gun up; got a tele and a dispenser in a decent place then just went around ambushing people with the shotgun. Got more kills in 1 life with my pistol then the SG got the whole round (3 if you were wondering).

Needs 2 well co-ordinated engies + 2 "heavy" classes covering them to get anything halfway decent set up imo, otherwise focus fire/spam can bring down pretty much any SG where ever it may be!

Thought of another addition/clarification, don't go down with the ship! You're not the captain of the titanic, I see lots of engis trying to save their sentries like they are their babies. Fair enough, if you think you have a decent chance of saving the sentry - do it. But you have to identify quickly what your chance of survival are, a good tactic (which I picked up from the messiah of engis) is to have a dispenser in a backward position. This relies on having good ammo drops at your sentry's location, but it means you can fall out when your sentry is gonna go down and get up a another one in very little. When a team has just destroyed a sentry, they often do not expect to find another one up and running just a bit further into the map and surprise is a major factor of engineering in my opinion.

I don't think the unlocks hurt the engi so much, but more the experience. People know where sentry usually are and how to deal with them by now. I remember getting 20 kills with a single sentry, nowadays I consider the achievement "Accumulate 10 Sentry gun kills with a single turret." down right impossible.
However I think engi as a prime example of a class that can't be valued in kills: The sentry is "just" an area denial tool now. That's not a bad thing! For example on badwater defense: You probably won't be able to get a lot of kills, but often you can deny the attackers access to the cart (roof; last point etc.) and that's way more valuable.

Having said all of that, I see the problem as engi and I too feel it to be boring like hell. Offensive engi is a lot of fun, but it only works on the right map on the right team sizes and with a little luck. It's great fun when you pull it off, but be prepared to die 5 times in a row without achieving anything and having to watch a spy sap all your buildings while you respawn.

Some good points, but surely the direct hit has made it harder? I certainly think so!

I remember the days of attacking an SG with the old rocket launcher and the engy repairing or not dying after soldier reloads. The direct hit has made it harder for the engy and easier for the solly to attack at range.

Recall me and Hzza doing assault engies on fastlane one day, basically doing as you said milli - running around and putting up cheeky lvl1s. If we worked as a pair, we could also get a lvl2 up in a matter of seconds. For the most part, it worked pretty well and made a nice change from the typical engi routine which I find dull as hell. Also as cheez said, don't underestimate the engis shottie
