Another monitor has broken in my possession.

This monitor was bought very cheaply on ebay without a cable. Turns out it needs a very odd power cable I assume no longer in production (round, 4 pins, about a centimeter in diameter). Luckily, my TV has the same cable, so I just have to choose between whether I want a PC or Playstation 2, just not both. Fine I thought, just swap over the power cable whenever I want playstation.

Was playing guitar hero with my housemate yesterday and when I went to swap over the power cable to the PC monitor it went weird. When plugged into the graphics card, it'll flash up with a white rectangle in the middle, then another box in the corner, where it says it's running through all the different resolutions, until it gets to 320x240 or whatever it is, then it stops and goes blank.

I then tried plugging it into my mobo graphics card and fewer results, the screen will go completely blank except for bright colours it will flash up individually on repeat.

I know its not the power cable because my TV still works. Is the other input fucked?

well are you sure the rating on the power cable matches what the monitor wants as input? If it doesn't you might have just fried it.

That was my first shout disco, but if the monitors coming up with crap then it isn't fried...

Fagballs, try a different output cable, if that doesn't work, get a new monitor. And spend some fucking money on it this time so you don't blow it up again .

Say for example I might have just fried it, is a repair job simple/cheap?

Not really, if some components are damaged (and some being damaged could cause faulty behaviour rather than just kill it) it'll be something like the capacitors or other sensitive components. And finding them and then replacing them is a hardcore repair. Its probably a write-off. But try a different video cable, and check the power rating on the monitor and cable (if its from your tv and the cable doesnt say check the tvs rating). Its usually mismatched current that kills things, youre looking for an expected voltage (can be quite a few volts out and be ok), and an expected current (a few amps out can total stuff).

I've tried two different graphics cables and had no results. I will check the power input when I get in and let you know.

Although I'm no expert I don't think it is the power input that's the problem.

disco's right though, even though it works with your PS2, it might have been fucking up your monitor slowly and caused it to blow out when the strain got too much.

I'm still in the "get a new one" camp, its going to cost you around £100 for a new one and (I'd imagine) around the same to get the old one repaired.

Just spoke to the tech guys on campus who reckon my resolution would have been too high for the monitor to deal with. Tis weird it chose now to spaz out but oh well. They also concluded it was a write-off.

... I'm not sure if I believe these tech guys. All modern display devices tend to just display the area they can and you end up with a scrolling desktop. It would have to be pretty shoddily designed for malformed/oversized video input to nuke it. That said they do expect you to use appropriate power cables and my moneys still on that! I'm not a tech support expert so i don't know for sure but at lot of people with the job title tech support don't have a clue either.

This power cable thing doesn't make any sense. It still powers the TV so its probably fine (does it feed direct from the mains or via a transformer?). Assuming your PC hasn't switched to a higher refresh frequency (do you get any signal on powering on the PC?), it's probably just that old monitor = died.

Bad frequencies can damage old CRT's, but we're talking *really* old for that normally. Probably not worth fixing, anyway.

I have a 1024*768 15" screen on my desk right now! Using it to display IRC/Mumble/HLSW ect.. Still works a treat and I got the thing in 1995
15 years old and still goin strong

My electronics knowledge is shoddy and mostly forgotten, so voltage current whatever, its still more likely than the your resolution is too high nonsense. And I was thinking external transformer whoops (beacuse of weird cable)! But yeah it could also just be old or be suffering from the dreaded http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague
