This power cable thing doesn't make any sense. It still powers the TV so its probably fine (does it feed direct from the mains or via a transformer?). Assuming your PC hasn't switched to a higher refresh frequency (do you get any signal on powering on the PC?), it's probably just that old monitor = died.
Bad frequencies can damage old CRT's, but we're talking *really* old for that normally. Probably not worth fixing, anyway.
My electronics knowledge is shoddy and mostly forgotten, so voltage current whatever, its still more likely than the your resolution is too high nonsense. And I was thinking external transformer whoops (beacuse of weird cable)! But yeah it could also just be old or be suffering from the dreaded http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plagueAnswers: Yes, transformer Having checked the transformer and the power thingy on my monitor both are working at 12v. Other comments: Monitor from 2003 Don't let me near your monitor chaos or my aura will break it.

is the current right too? I'm sure theres some forgotten reason my brain is nagging about it but I can't put it into words and maybe i'm just wrong but ideally you want to be giving it the voltage and current it asks for so it gets the right power supplied to it. Stuff from my electrical systems lectures the ones I suck at. P=IV and all that. Thank goodness I'm never going to be an electrical engineer!

And also there's the fact the polarity has to be correct whoops - massive size (that's what she said) but you get the idea. it all depends on which way your AC adapter swings.

is the current right too? I'm sure theres some forgotten reason my brain is nagging about it but I can't put it into words and maybe i'm just wrong Voltage is important, although often voltages are regulated onboard so they can use cheap-ass transfomers. Device draws current it needs. PSU capable of supplying 5A will be fine if device only pulls 3A. Device wanting 5A with PSU capable of 3A probably causes magic smoke to come out, and possibly Bad Things in other places depending on device. That's probably enough about that. No 'ass transformer' comments please

Why are you fannying about Tommy be a real man and fix it. Take it apart study the insides like you know what's going on, break something else acidentally, loose all the the little screws then throw the whole lot in the bin and buy a new monitor.

This. It's the way of the warrior....a test of manhood. Take something slightly broken and fuck it up completely.

Don't worry, I will be taking a hammer to that piece of shit soon.
Got new monitor now though, 20" LG, £110 from PC *spit on the floor* world. Prolly could have done better on internet but can you collect a PC monitor with moderate ease on the day of order? I THINK NOT.
