We have an electricity card meter, it's a pain to keep topped up but it doesn't half bring home to you how much you use.  We've managed to get our usage down from £20 a week to a little over £10.

I failed to sell my Mazda on ebay so I put it in for an MOT yesterday, on the way there the wing mirror glass fell out and I stood and watched helplessly as it got run over by 3 cars and a bus.  You cannot get wing mirror glass for a Mazda 323F quickly for love nor money.  The car still passed as I've used the garage for years, but still it's a pain.

I went to Ashford car auctions last night, basically on a whim. Those of you who are unaware of how things work at UK car auctions, there are 2 grades of car there, the "sold as seen" where basically you bid and there's no comeback or the "no major mechanical faults" where you get an hour to check the car over.  You also have to pay an extra £70 fee to the auctioneer over the price of the car and a £200 deposit immediately.

I, of course had to promise Mrs Bystander not even to consider buying anything.  It was a bit of an eye opener and I very tempted to come home with an 1980s Mercedes G-Wagon with a full set of off road tyres for £230.  I doubt if I could of hidden a bright orange 4x4 from Mrs Bystander for long though.

There were a lot of bargains to be had, an immaculate a Y reg (2001) Golf TDI for £1500, a 51 Ford Focus Ghia for £500, a T reg (1998) V8 4.6 Vogue Range Rover for £1500 and a 51 V6 Peugeot 406 Estate for just £350.  Basically no one wants big engined cars or 4x4s, if you can afford the insurance and petrol you can pick up one hell of a bargain.

I will return with a pile of cash and a warmed up bidding hand.

Edit:  Forgot to say there were some seriously dodgy looking guys there.

Got my electricity bill today. The good news, I used less than their estimates, so I'm £35 in credit. The bad news, from next month my bill will increase by eighty fucking percent.

Used to love auctions bought a Porsche once on a whim, found you can get better bargins scouring the local papers private adds, leave it a week and phone for the car you want if its not sold in the week the seller is usually a bit more desparate and will drop the price more

if it wasn't sexism though some managers prefer to hire people they can keep under their heel and not have their job threatened... Whenever I was doing catering work the managers were always laughably bad and it irked me that they were paying someone with less common sense, catering experience, and intelligence to run things. Had I been doing any of those jobs long term like a number of months I would have probably had one of the managers jobs

@Mama: I think they believe you are overqualified so they chose a stupid woman. She is so relieved that she got the job, she will never ever leave again. And/or she is too dumb to realise that she is getting exploit.
You on the other hand will find something better pretty soon and would of course notice and not accept if they pay not enough money or let you work 100 hours a week or whatever.

I many years ago had a fill in the employment gap job driving a van, delivering car parts. It was weird, all the drivers were girls and the office was full of guys.

My boss only employed girls as drivers as apparently the guys from the garages only wanted to look at women.

Sexist wanker. Needless to say that job didn't last long, funnily enough that wasn't what killed it, it was me saying that i thought holidays should have some payment and that i wasn't working overtime for nothing that got me fired, oh and they were shafting us on wages, we weren't even getting minimum wage.

I must have been the only girl there who knew even half of what she was delivering!!
