Met a Grand Designs "celebrity" today, for those who watch the program regularly (well since 2004 anyway) the guy who had the Huf Haus built came into the shop.  A genuinely nice and interesting guy he told me how he sold the house because he was tired of painting it (I'd be pissed off if my "ultimate" house needed painting every couple of years too) and made a £1.2 million pound profit in the middle of the property crash.  He moved to Sandgate near Folkestone where I used to live and was telling me how he stopped his house sliding down the hill.

Today was the annual trip to the one-day roleplaying convention Dragonmeet

Didn't play in any games this year but bought some tasty accessories.

And a while ago when I was just browsing youtube I came across this and I was just blown away! These people had just read my mind

and they were at Dragonmeet. Of course a purchase was made. The scary gaming group are coming around later and I'm going to use it plus a pen and a pencil I bought...really smart, matt black with Travellers Aid Society on from the Traveller role-playing game...we running it at the moment in our Monday group.

I think sick with excitement doesn't cover it.

I haven't posted in here for a while!

Been pretty busy at work - had my appraisal a couple of weeks ago which went pretty well. Well enough that I got to mock the entire appraisal process, disregarded all of the objectives I was given and write my own. "Get it right first time" is not a valid objective for a software developer!

At home - I've been working on my Giant Tetris! The last of the main parts arrived last week (the stand and the plastic sheet for the front windows) so I was very busy over the weekend trying to fit it all together (typically - none of the holes lined up!).

Turned out pretty well!


I've also found my first sponsor - National Instruments might be giving me a piece of kit worth £250 in return for using it at marketing events!

Also at work - a couple of weeks ago someone at work gave a presentation about setting up a company social initiative thing - basically trying to set up a group for organising social events, volunteering and that kind of thing. Said colleague is also leaving at the end of this year so she presented the idea and is then leaving. A small group of us said we were interested in helping (I wanted to help out with volunteering in STEM - science, tech, engineering, maths). Somehow - I've ended up taking her place of 'championing' the initiative and trying to get it started/running. Wasn't really expecting that but we'll see how it goes over the next few months.

Started off in the right place by sending a survey to all the employees to see what they want from it and spent like 3-4 hours this evening trying to come up with a workable plan and to figure out what needs to happen. Probably means I'll have to do some spokes-personning and give a presentation or two to the whole company along with meeting some fairly senior execs (who previously, as a lowly software engineer, I have managed to avoid!) to discuss getting their support and if we want any funding or anything like that.

On the one hand, I'm pretty apprehensive - having never done anything like this before but on the other hand I think it'll probably be pretty good for me (my career here if I don't fuck it up, future career stuff etc.).

We have corporate volunteers at work from time to time. We had a group from Aviva doing a days gardening for us and a groupnt  from somewhere else doing some painting at the Resource Centre: we count as a worthy cause 

Is that the sort of volunteering you'll be doing? Can't see how it will tie in with volunteering in STEM....what sort of volunteering is done there?

I chopped down some trees in a park in Fulham once as a corporate thing. Beat out all the accountants who spent their days pulling weeds in churchyards(?!)

Yeah - at the moment there's the STEM side which is part of a national organisation (STEMnet) which gets volunteer engineers, scientists etc. to help run activities at schools - I did a couple last year for an ant-weight robot challenge (building some simple remote control robots which take part in challenges) for a school and an accommodation centre for troubled teenagers. They also run 'science fair' type events as well as linking up people to schools to help with technical projects and after school clubs.

The other side is more the community outreach which is pretty much what you've described - volunteering for local worthy causes in the local community, raising money for charities - that sort of thing.

By the way - if anyone works for a company that has a similar scheme (volunteering, company organised social events that sort of thing) - I'd love to know a little more about it to help point us in the right direction. Post here or let me know on steam so I can have a chat with you

Well I had pretty awesome day at work this week, I was going to treat myself to some new snowboarding boots for Christmas so I was eye banging some sweet ass boots at work and the boss stopped by and saw what I was doing

Can't go wrong with a pair of thirtytwos. I got jp walker lights last year. Nice and comfy. Did they come with the heat mouldable liners?  Worth getting them heat moulded IMO
