Actually there is, a guy in brighton has reported a similar issue and I think he suggested it might be an overloaded node. Sooo is there nothing I can do?

Keep complaining until they fix it. Or find everyone else on your node and blow up their house - thus relieving congestion.

I'd look to your home equipment actually, from that tracert your first hop (home router) pings vary quite a bit. If your first hop has a problem, you'll see problems at every subsequent hop. Can you run a ping for a while to the first hop (ping -t 10.10.140.1) and after a while hit CTRL-Break and it will give you the stats.

Are you playing over wireless? The evening service degredation could well simply be the fact that wireless bandwidth is shared between all the devices on the network, plus EM interference from other home devices and your neighbors can degrade signal quality.
Try enabling your windows firewall and plugging directly into the cable modem, bypassing the router. See what tracerts to google look like then.

If it's not that, I'm guessing you're on an ADSL service, which are notoriously over-contended for all the reasonably priced ISP's.

Well spotted. +1

The wifi router from virgin is pants (i have posted before how I cant poll servers through it).

Will be worth checking this out.

I'd have thought he has cable, (20mb download from virgin) but even that an become overstretched depending on number of local users....

Tried the things you suggested Zarf. Pin test did nothing, just constantly timed out, but plugged directly into the modem and no difference really. Still lag in game.

Another thing that bothers me, ingame, my net_graph ping is what it should be:

hmm, Can you do a pathping 193.93.45.30? Give a bit more detailed stats than a tracert.

Try using the Virgin Media newsgroups for tech support, you get quick responses directly from the real techies. They should be able to tell you what's what.

Quote
In Windows Live Mail, you'd click the "Newsgroups" link at the bottom of the screen and then Tools/Accounts then Add/Newsgroup Account.

Give your Display Name (like Arj12), your e-mail address (which can be fictitious) then your server address for the newsgroup which is "news.virginmedia.com".

You'll then be able (via the Newsgroups menu item) to select the Virgin media icon on the left of a search panel, click on "All" and wait a few minutes till it's finished listing thousands of newsgroups.

Scroll down to "Virginmedia.support.broadband.cable" and double click it.

And you're there. You can post your stuff including any evidence you've collected.

modified my post :/
try the pathping too. you can copy and paste results rather than screenshotting - right click in the command window and choose "mark", select the text and hit enter. You should now have the text in your clipboard for pasting.

Just for interest, here's my results -

After going through the newsgroup, seems like a fair few people in Brighton are having this problem which the tech guys are aware of and in the the process of fixing, however there's no set date for when it'll be done. One guy is quoted 22nd February, whilst another guy shortly after is told 6-8 weeks =/

BS imo, surely I shouldn't have to pay the full amount if they're not providing the service I signed up for

You shouldn't, tell them that you are not willing to pay the full amount until they provide you with service that they have promised. Or insist on compensation once it has been fixed based on how long it has taken them to do so.
