HALP!

One of my hard drives failed, I'm running RAID0 so unless I can fix it, I'm fucked and the last 6 months of gaming will have gone down the shitter Sad. Ironic that I just ordered a 1TB external drive so I can do a backup incase my RAID failed...

Any ideas how I can get it back from the dead?

What does it do (or what doesn't it)?

Bootdrive, not booting?
Or datadrive, not showing under windows? If that, does it show in BIOS?
Checked cables? Checked settings in BIOS/RAID controller?

Yeah, sorry, just went to get some more info.

So, it starts up fine, I get an error message against one of my hard disk drives in the BIOS text flash thingy (trying to upload a picture ATM but aparently my bluetooths broken on my phone [MORE RAGE]). Then we get the "Windows didn't shut down properly" screen with the option to run in safe mode etc and no matter what I select at that point it just restarts.

To be honest, its only game data that I'm going to loose so its not a major thing to wipe and restart but I don't want to do that if any of it can be saved.

And yeah, probably won't be hitting RAID up again...

Again, honey:
Is it the boot drive(s)? What does the BIOS say? Carefully check the settings of the RAID controller.

Error message in the BIOS doesn't sound good - as Tea says, need more info really. Do you have the 1 TB drive to copy on to?

Even if the RAID has failed, you can still use both of them (just not in RAID)

If you have your External, back everything up now, If not, burn off your save data (and anything else you wanna keep) to some DVDs and remember to mark clearly what you've put on each one (could take a LOT of discs!)

Once you've backed everything up, you can try a good defrag and scan (get a trail of a 3rd party app for this, I recommend Diskeeper pro)
That can sometimes prolong the inevitable

MOst serious error you could see would be SMART related - this is the error detection / prediction software in modern hard drives.

Best bet is to boot from a new hard drive and see if you can copy data from the RAID?

Jordan, unless I am missing something, drives working in RAID 0 would not work in isolation from each other? The data is striped accross the two drives... and RAID 0 offers no redundancy?

Extract from wikipedia:

RAID 0 (striped disks) distributes data across multiple disks in a way that gives improved speed at any given instant. If one disk fails, however, all of the data on the array will be lost, as there is neither parity nor mirroring. In this regard, RAID 0 is somewhat of a misnomer, in that RAID 0 is non-redundant. A RAID 0 array requires a minimum of two drives. A RAID 0 configuration can be applied to a single drive provided that the RAID controller is hardware and not software (i.e. OS-based arrays) and allows for such configuration. This allows a single drive to be added to a controller already containing another RAID configuration when the user does not wish to add the additional drive to the existing array. In this case, the controller would be set up as RAID only (as opposed to SCSI only (no RAID)), which requires that each individual drive be a part of some sort of RAID array

Yes, its the boot disk, the error message in the Disk/Volume information jobbie is that the RAID is normal/bootable but the drive in port 4 is stats "Error Occurred (0)".

Googling the error message isn't that helpful as a lot of the suggestions require Windows to boot, which it isn't...

edit
@chaos, can't get into Windows to make the backups otherwise I would've just wiped and started again Wink.

@John, I'll see if the old mans got a spare HD floating around and give that a go tomorrow I guess Sad.

Kids, this is why you should
  • NEVER EVER use raid 0 on its own. It's fine in a Raid 10 setup, but other than that, stay away from it.
  • If you want to use raid, use software raid. If a hardware raid controller goes belly up you're more often buggered than not. (If you absolutely, positively, really, for pete's sake, MUST use hardware raid: Have an identical copy of the controller in it's original foil in the drawer.)
  • Have a WinPE bootable disc (or your-computer-running-raids-os'es eqivalent) at the ready at all times.

For those of you that didn't follow these rules, change that now. I may provide a suitable WinPE disc image over private channels if you require one.

Oh and as for the Disk/Volume information Error Occured, I've had success getting it back up with just reactivating the disk...

If it's a raid 0 either get professional help (expensive) or don't bother.
Even a professional will have problems getting stuff off there.

Nowt wrong with RAID0, as long as you have a decent back up schedule.
If you use Acronis you can do differential backups from within windows, so it only backs up disk changes, thus meaning you can have it set to back up once or twice a day and it won't take very long.
Then if a drive dies no problem, remove the raid array and restore your image to the remaining working disk and run in normal mode until your replacement arrives.

(Where that backup schedule is, optimally, a RAID1 situated above or below... Wink )
Still, the use cases for home use are severely limited IMHO.

Most newer Linux distributions have the Intel and other software RAID drivers in built.

Try booting to a Knoppix or Ubuntu CD, and grabbing the data (to an external hard drive) that way, if it cooperates. A windows boot CD can work as well - UBCD4Win with a floppy disk ready with the drivers is an easy choice, or there is the official recovery one I've forgotten the name of.

If you can even get the OS to START booting then your RAID apparently is "okay". I've had some major issues just getting RAID1 sorted with the Intel stuff myself (the data always was fine - in fact no hard drives ever really failed, just it said they did...hmmm. Windows 7 Pro in built RAID1 is what I'm using now!). It can just be the Intel stuff buggering up and the actual data is fine - if read through something other then the Intel drivers!
