Right, update.

Well, not much to update to be fair, I deleted the RAID which, of course wiped the drives. Then tried booting from the CD drive which didn't work. After an anoying hour of trying everything out it turns out when I'd tried plugging the faulty HDD in a different SATA port I'd accidentally unplugged the DVD drive....

Just at the reinstalling windows stage now so if that all goes to play I'm probably going to be back up and running again in a couple of days.

edit - Obviously not in RAID0, once bitten and all that jazz.

Look at this that way:
Since you've lost data of various games now you have the perfect reason to replay all these games again. It's basically twice the fun for the same money. So in fact you've got some value from this accident. Cheerio.

Nowt wrong with RAID0, as long as you have a decent back up schedule.

(Where that backup schedule is, optimally, a RAID1 situated above or below... )
Still, the use cases for home use are severely limited IMHO.

There are definitely performance benefits to RAID0, and RAID10 is the ideal balance of performance and resiliency - but at the cost of 4 drives you may as well just get an SSD instead if it's performance you care about.

Which of course presents you again with the problem of resiliency, even at a greater scale since SSD so far are not as reliable as HDD (which will certainly change in the next few years).

I think the best solution is probably a good mix of SDD, RAID and regular HD, combined with good backup strategy for important stuff.

Actually from the numbers i've seen the RMA figures for SSD's are much better than mechanical drives.

Have to agree, with no moving parts, SSD are far more reliable.
