The heavy has always been suggested as a beginner's class for the obvious reason that his health gives him some survivability and his action is very straight forward. Point and klick. Aiming helps, but isn't even a priority (you know what I mean).

Exactly what I said and what Valve intended. Beginner class. I never said it was easy to master. It's a damn sight easier then "Scout I don't know how to double jump oops one shot and I died" and "sniper I don't know how to right click to aim to fire, and what, do I really have to aim for that tiny head to actually kill something?"

Saying Medics are rare is rubbish too, that's only been exemplified since the more recent class packs, which took over medic usage to unusually high proportions.

Valve knew what they were doing making the Heavy one of the prime choices. Good as a tutorial? Fuck no, they failed utterly there, the lazy gits, but at least it gives new users a chance Cheesy

I don't know what definition of 'beginner' you're using there, but I feel TF2 is a fairly complex game, and I'd want a class where you can stay alive while you figure out what on earth is going on. The size and slowness of the heavy is misleading - it /looks/ like a tank class, but really isn't, especially not against decent players. You can't just put your war face on and wade in there.

I maintain medics aren't going to be particularly common, especially if you're a new to the game and playing heavy. There's a lot to learn and I imagine most medics aren't going to want to babysit the new guy.

As for the sniper, you're reaching considerably with 'I don't know how to right click to aim to fire', it's hardly a new mechanic! Besides, thousands of counterstrike players seem to have no problem clicking on my tiny little head, repeatedly! Decent beginner choice I think, if nothing else you can get some feel for the game.

 I love the fact that this hasn't been a lol-a-pyro thread.

 Personally, i'd say the pyro is, but ONLY when he's using the backburner, it's all the camping skill of a demo-man without the timing.

 On the other hand, i'd say regular airblast pyro has one of the higher skill ceilings to get the reflects right, im still working on alot of the angling (as in, not just shooting them straight back, shooting a demo's stickies to a completely different target for eg), yet iv'e got the timing cracked.

 Engy's also one of the harder imo, but it depends how your rating 'easy'. 'Easy' as in, not exactly hard to master, if it looks suspicious, hit it with your wrench, hide behind your dispenser. 'Hard' as in, try getting a decent score on most maps (retarded publics excluded).

Today there is no longer an "easy" class, just players with different skill and experience. A good player will rip an inexperienced player apart, regardless of both their classes.
I have to agree with this... but I don't think it was always that way. I think Hzza was saying in his Fort2 article about the removal of hard counters, the game has progressed in such a way that if you're very good at one class, you'll stand a good chance at beating an enemy team no matter what their classes are. As a spy now I can eat W+M1 pyros for breakfast as long as I get them to fight me on my terms, and just shoot them down in 4 shots.

But TF2 is a team game... points don't mean prizes. New players shouldn't be encouraged by classes that yield the most points, they ought to be encouraged to play as a team and wiiiin! Engies can quite easily contribute to the team... but again as Tea said, if you've got a good player on the opposite team who knows how to take down sentries a new engie won't fare too well.

Meh, not disputing that, but the point system generally gives a rough idea of your contribution to the team Wink Ofc they contribute to the team, just from my own experiance as engy it kills one person, they then come back as a demo next life and finish me off, just makes me feel like i'd have made a bigger contribution playing something else ^^
