Well, engi has a relatively low skill ceiling, however he is relatively hard to get to decent levels, since you need to know the good sentry spots.

I think the demo is the easiest to start (not to master mind you, mastering the demo is hard stuff), since you can simply place some stickies at a bottleneck and wait.

Easiest to pick up and play, or easiest to pick up and play effectively?

The first, definitely soldier. You're a man with a rocket launcher. You shoot at stuff. Life is easy.

The second, I would argue medic, in terms of the most useful class a brand new player could pick and contribute to a team.

Not attempting to turn playing engy into an artform, but of course there's a more sophisticated level to this.
Building placement, yes. But also: Metal management. Spy detection and defense. Sense when to move buildings, in which order. Know when to place a sentry for distraction and when to fortify a spot.
It becomes another level once more than one sg is involved (complementing placement etc)

Heavy or pyro for absolute beginners, either way you're operation human shield for the other players. Everyone says medic but noobs will wander right into fire. And also when I first started I didn't know how to ubercharge (everyone stfu)

Especially when Cruelcow/Scroggage are around and Snipers like AmS and Cheez

But the Heavy is easy to understand. big gun, slow movement - needs medic.
After that you have to work on your paranoia.

I don't understand heavy. Only Sasha understands.

For me, the easiest class is the soldier. Went around on badlands with a kritz medic for a round = 31 kills/42 points. If you keep the same measurement standards as in the OP, of course...

I just don't get what we're arguing about here. The easiest class to play is the one, that you're playing against noobs.

Heavy and engie have almost stair shaped skill curves- both rely on knowing where to be at the right time. Engie is NOT just about knowing the good sentry spots- it's about knowing whether it's safe to move, safe to build, where the metal is, and where your teammates are. If you're playing the more aggressive breed of engie it's a different step entirely to be able to play effectively.

The "easiest" class for me is the one that you feel you learn the quickest (i.e. become effective with and contribute to your team).

then this whole topic is useless, as it's personal choice if your definition is right. imo it's faulty (mainly due to being personal) and again the same question, how do you define easy in TF2, by the skill ceiling of the class, or else?
and at Chug, it's the same with any other class, e.g demoman - you have to know where your stickies are, where your teammates are, last seen enemy positions or nests in publics, where are the medpacks and your medic(s) while at the same time actually shooting instead of camping behind a sentry (which gives time to think).
