They designed the Heavy to be the easiest class to start with - slow moving, more health ( == longer lifespan) slowdown when using weapon, big firing arc ( == easier to aim) and best medic pal ( == gets good help and can still be effective). They put this on their blog somewhere.

I'd tend to agree with this design layout. For most of the people here though, any class bar the spy might be fine to say is "easiest" since they have correlations to other FPS weapons. The mean amount of points are going to be better for a new player as a heavy then any other class bar perhaps the medic (if you learn how to not shoot things, but even then it's easier to start as a heavy to find out how medics work). The highest is always going to be insanely higher then an average in any case.

In that case they were dead wrong (do they even play their own game?), since I'd say it's one of the tougher classes to start with. You've got a class which moves slowly, is useless without excellent knowledge of the levels, and is very weak without a medic which are fairly rare on pubs anyway.

As others have said it depends on how you define 'easy', but I'd probably pick scout as a fair starter class. Just by running around and shooting things you'll learn the levels, you won't be spending 20 seconds getting to the front line just to get headshot right away, and I don't think the learning curve is as steep as some others.

Yeah and for most classes in tf2, it's alot more about gamesense than aim. So I agree with claws, especially for old css/cod (general fpsers), the scout is easy to pickup because you can use skills from other games which can't be said about many classes.

Well sniper comes to mind. No special abilities, normal speed, ok health, though he is usually out of harms way anyway. Stand anywhere, point your crosshair over enemy, push button. Sniper is pretty much the same in every shooter, so I'd imagine this is the class that translates the best if you have FPS background.

Interesting... I feel the scout is one of the harder ones to learn since you need to learn to pick enemies and all the health pack locations if you want to be able to survive.

Sniper is a good call too, but I felt that you pretty much know if sniper is (or isn't) for you anyway.  I probably started with soldier, but it seems so slooow at first.

That's true Cruel, but you'll probably want to learn health locations pretty quickly anyway. Scout is fragile, but at least you can explore quickly - 20 second respawn times and a slow character class would really put me off. I'm sure given a few hours many would think 'ugh i hate this class, I want to play X', but by that time you'd have a better idea what X is Smiley

Sigh, no offense, but most of that is basically BS, simply because so much of it is true.

One of the beauties of TF2 is a grown and well developed class structure. Each class has its own learning curve with very different starting points, and an almost unlimited skill ceiling.

Some people coming from games like UT or (back in the days) Quake will feel comfortable with the soldier or - to some degree - the scout. People coming from CS might slide easier into sniper or pyro.
The spy was never an "easy" class for dozens of reasons.

The heavy has always been suggested as a beginner's class for the obvious reason that his health gives him some survivability and his action is very straight forward. Point and klick. Aiming helps, but isn't even a priority (you know what I mean).

And of course all this does no longer apply after 2 years of TF2 and the accumulated experience, not to mention the changes. Today there is no longer an "easy" class, just players with different skill and experience. A good player will rip an inexperienced player apart, regardless of both their classes.

So this talk about "easy" classes are pretty much fruitless.
If anything you can say that the learning curve for some classes are more benevolent, and therefor will offer a more continuous motivation. On the other hand a steep learning curve (e.g. demo or spy) will rather help to seperate the wheat from the chaff, meaning you have fewer moderate skilled people here, while the skill level of some of the other classes are more evenly spread.
