The part of me that absoloutely hammered the Stronghold series when I was younger really makes me want to pick up the Stronghold 3, but I've heard from pretty much every single source going that the game is utter dogshit.

Best deal of the whole sale so far?
The Total-War mega-pack, I'd pay £8.50 alone just to get all the Medieval TW2 content on my steam account despite already owning the game.

Everyone should play Call of Pripyat. We may never see its likes again.

One thing that always scarred me off the Stalker games is that I have bad memories from the first one where you had to install custom fanmade patches or mods so that the game isnt buggy or anything. Does that still apply to CoP? I usually hate games that only become good or essentially better when you have to install mods (also one reason I dont like Skyrim or Oblivion).

I played Skyrim pretty much mod free. It's generally a very polished game. I'm also interested in your view on CoP, I played SoC a couple of times but really struggled to get into it and never completed it but maybe this will make me interested again? All I really want to do is visit the power plant!

They have fixed the quickslot menu a little bit but still its very annoying and the limitations it gives just shout controller-itis everywhere. The rest is fine.

CoP is the most complete, polished and accessible Stalker game there is. I played it vanilla and didn't have any glaring issues. One thing about it though is it won't hold your hand. If you don't go exploring you won't find a lot of the cool side stuff. But imo that's an advantage not a disadvantage.
Unhappily, it new big levels do mean there is only one terror dungeon as opposed to many more in the old stalker, but it's a small niggle really compared to everything else awesome in the game.

Then render me interested. Do I need to play through the first 2 to get the story or can I just start with CoP?

There are still scary bits.. Just only the one big terror deep under ground crying with fear.
Want to replay it now.. Such a boss game.
You should be fine without playing the first one. In an ideal world people would play all of them, but I can understand why people don't want to (even I haven't got very far in clear skies)
You don't really need to know the previous plots because there's not really a big "stry of the zone". Each game is more about the stories of individuals and like in reality, the individuals don't really make a huge impact on the world (but big impacts on a few others) It's not like a great hero came and saved the zone or you're playing a hero who has a complex back story. Clear Skies and SoC are a bit related but CoP is pretty much stand alone in my opinion.
