(Finally) finished Mass Effect (the first) today, meaning I have a save with which to move onto the second at some point.
By the end of the first though, I have to say I was getting a tiny bit bored. The game looks fantastic, the combat is often fun and challenging (when your bot-party members aren't obscenely stupid) and the background universe is pretty good and quite immersive. And I actually liked the Mako combat bits.
But there are things that bother me, like (male) Shepard's likeness to a cardboard box in terms of demonstrating any kind of emotion, pointless "go here, take this elevator, kill one guy, then report back for reward" quests, planet-trawling in the Mako...
I took 29 and a bit hours to do the game, I think it's meant to be 20. This is because I kind of went to town a bit with the levelling, got to L47 by the endgame. But I never felt really powerful... it seems like enemies are scaled to how powerful you are, which works in things like Fallout3 and Oblivion, but really made Shepard seem quite gimped at times in ME1.
Shepard: "Aha! I shot the alien with my 350-damage sniper rifle".
Game: "Ah, but because you own that sniper rifle, the alien has 3 times the health it used to, in order to compensate..." just seems silly.
Also the fact the storyline was so cinematic... having just played Deus Ex through again, where you can change the outcome of serious decisions with a powerful enough character, it felt really restrictive when *actual spoiler alert*
you had to choose between two of your crew members to live. Screw you, game! I'm easily a seasoned enough soldier now to save both of them and be home in time for tea. But no, I'm somehow gimped again and face the same choice that someone at that mission with a level 20 Shepard would.
There are supposedly tonnes of choices, but they're all pretty superficial. In the end, ME1 seemed to me like some new breed of "corridor RPG" which by the end I was a bit fed up with.
So, to the actual point... is ME2 any different with regards to this sort of thing, or will I be equally disappointed? How does the savegame content carry over, do I start in ME2 as a really powerful Infiltrator, or am I gimped back to pre-spectre Shepard with piss-poor weapons?

The point was both of the outcomes would happen at the same time, therefore you to choose one, just because you're super-awesome at shooting the mens, doesn't mean you can travel through time.

Males showing emotions? Are you drunk?
Did you do lots of sidemissions? Because I felt them all to be the same dreadful stuff, while the main mission felt good.
I dunno, I hated auto-leveling in Oblivion, but I loved it in ME, no idea why.
IMHO the gameplay is way better in 2, however far too little stuff carries over. Yeah, you get people thanking you via email and sometimes you hear a news message about some stuff you did before affecting people, but don't expect any special side missions.
Especially the romance thing. I romanced liara and all that changed was my character gave her a kiss the first time we met. Other than that not a single dialog line change :/
OK, depending how you 'treated' Wrex you get to see him again, getting a different dialog tree, but once the conversation is over the only difference is a different krogan model sitting there.
It does get more shootery though, it depends on you if you enjoyed spending hours in the inventory screen or not.
One thing I've learned playing both 1 and 2 is that the more weapons you carry, the easier it gets. The sniper rifle makes lots of things go away at a distance where biotics just do nothing.

Must agree with Cruel about most of the decisions in 1 making no difference to 2. Will be interesting to see what they do in 3.

I never used the sniper rifle because I was a Bionics dude (In ME1) I got by OK. Bionics may not be as "good" as a sniper rifle, but they sure are more fun.
Will probably buy ME2 when I see it for a fiver (Like I saw ME1)

You don't need a sniper rifle, all you need is to play vanguard and use the Evi shotgun; most OP combo in the entire game.

Well yes, you don't
need
sniper rifles.
But it gets much much easier with it.
Especially on higher difficulty levels, where every enemy has either armor or shield or both and the only thing you have that can reliable hit distant enemies in cover is shockwave :/

Yeah, biotic powers are majorly borked on the higher difficulties as they don't work through shields and even the smallest grunts have huuuuuuge shields and bugger all health so you're better off shooting them. I only really used the big AoE ones to strip shields a bit before I went charging in.

Is this with regard to ME1 or 2? Cos I played Infiltrator in 1, but barely ever used tech powers because the sniper rifle was far too cool... headshots on the PC are much easier than on the XBOX I guess.

Spoiler bit
The point was both of the outcomes would happen at the same time, therefore you to choose one, just because you're super-awesome at shooting the mens, doesn't mean you can travel through time.
Yeah, I read in the credits that Jennifer Hale (Bastila) was female Shepard and had a big OMGWTFBBQRESTARTTHEGAMEASHER moment. But didn't.
In response to the second bit:
Even though they happen at the same time, when I got to Ashley's fight to save her, it was just a normal fight... not particularly tough. Don't think any of the party's shields even went down. From my point of view, when Saren stepped in like a big idiot, it didn't logically follow from the result of owning his Geth.
Also, why the hell is Kaiden, also level 47 or whatever, the only loss from the other squads? I saw all the others on my ship after. No way were they all tougher than my squad. But still, they survived and he didn't.
It's just the silly-factor of something happening that you *can't* change even though my Kaiden wouldn't have died, even if Shepard didn't have time to get to him. No reward for tougher characters.
Deus Ex spoiler for comparison:
When Paul tells you to flee his hotel room, the natural thing is to do so. You've got MIBs and commandos coming up the stairs to kill you both. But the alternative, if you're good enough, is to say (not even in game, I might add) "No, screw you, Paul, I'm going to save you from these bastards." You don't even decide it in conversation, your actions determine if Paul lives or dies. So a good player, who's built a tough JC can go toe-to-toe with the MJ12 guys and beat them, and Paul lives. It's bastard hard, but it's possible. And just knowing that the option is there makes it a far better model for game-changing decisions, because it all happens emergently...
Basically I would say it would be better at that point in ME1 just to give you the facts and say: "go save one of them, maybe two of them, maybe none of them, depends how well you do it."
Spoiler train goes choo choo.

Is this with regard to ME1 or 2? Cos I played Infiltrator in 1, but barely ever used tech powers because the sniper rifle was far too cool... headshots on the PC are much easier than on the XBOX I guess.
Both. In general, if you're used to playing shooters, you can easily up the difficulty by one.
