Subtitle : 'games I wanted to like more than I did'. Let me state now this is all 'in my opinion' so I don't have to keep saying it

HL2Ep1/etc : I loved HL1 and HL2, although both suffer from uneven pacing. But Ep1 & 2 just felt stale, and the end section of ep2 made me more frustrated than I'd been for years. This kind of storytelling is possibly played out for me, but ep3 will have to be something special.

Bioshock : I'll admit I loved the whole Ayn Rand-esque style and it looks terrific. But by the time I got to the 'twist' I was bored senseless. It's perfectly fine, but I'm not quite sure why everyone raves about it. Although if you let the little sisters die you are a monster!

Portal : The writing is excellent (since it's the OMM team) and the song was a brilliant idea. Take away those and the rest is average at best. The last couple of levels are so much better, it suddenly gets good and then ... finishes. I tried one of those portal expansion packs and it showed me that I only really played it for the funnies, lasted about 5 minutes before I got bored.

I agree with your Bioshock and HL ideas.. but without the song portal's still a great game that's really original you can't take the writing out of the equation because story is vital to any games greatness.. without that, every game is pretty much the same
I still loved Bioshock though.. as far as console games go, its awsome! but there are better PC RPGs out there

i love portal i thought it was a really good concept and the perfect length if it was any longer it would have got a little tedious. Admittedly one of my friends can complete the game in around 9 mins now in a speed run but i always take my time. The way he kills glados is jsut :O though.

i never played bioshock the whole way through only the demo. I will paly it at some point when steam has it cheap again. i really likled the art direction but am not sure where the story was going to go. I also finally have a pc that can make it look good now so may be worht me looking in too.

For me big let downs were:

Crysis Warhead: Was a fun game and alot more action than crysis but took me no time at all to complete so far too short.
Red Alert 3: It just doesn't match up to the CNC's

what about games that have surprised you the most, where you did not expect much but got a lot for and really enjoyed?

Any RTS game that wasn't Total War after Shogun Total War came out.  Thinking Warcraft 3, all the C&C games after C&C2 etc

Glados made portal really. I doubt I would of finished it if it wasn't for her/it.

The Medal of Honour games. They're rubbish.

Appalling, Junta .... appalling (although he is overrated).

Some nice choices so far. While I'm at it, everything single player 'id' have ever done or will do. and Gears of War (the first one). Assassins Creed, what a load of old rubbish that was.

Game surprises... Mirrors Edge, I couldn't see the appeal before release but loved it, parts of it were amazing. And Batman Arkham Asylum, which from the demo was 'ok', but the full game is one of my favourites this year.

Only played Halo on PC but I thought it was dreadful, couldn't bring myself to finish it. Portal isn't a *bad* game, it's just what you get when you put a pretty average devteam together with great writers : an average game with great writing.

Bioshock was a big disappointment to me, because I was expecting art deco system shock. And it wasn't. Still good, just not what I was expecting.

Oh yes, forgot that Halo was truly awful on the PC, especially as it had to compete with Half Life 2.

My main point, is just if you subjected yourself to the entire Halo series which as far as the masses are concerned is amazing, you will be weaping for portal and its crappy source engine.

Assasins Creed, yes it really suffers from repitition. It so nearly made it as an amazing game, but when it comes down to it, you go to a new city and repeat the same stages, Exploration, Get Chummy with locals, Get Info, Pretend like you're going to stealth it then jump up and stab some dude in the eye. I've heard the second one though has fixed the boring missioness, so i'll be picking it up at some point.

BioShock, I think suffered because it was an amazing game but they'd spent a lot of time putting it on this shiny pedastal of awesomeness that when it was released our expectations for it were ridicolous. The nerfing of killing little sisters, the crappy ending, and a few loose ends and the highly linear shooter nature (sure i heard claims of pick your route through rapture!) just all left a bitter taste. Also they talked about an ecosystem between Little Sisters and splicers but i barely saw them doing anything except ignoring each other.

HL Episodes. I enjoyed them to some extent, there were a few sections with zombies in toxic waste that bored me but generally I was happy with them (except the fucking gnome achievement, why can you not fix him to the fucking car! Most frustration ever, but I did eventually launch that fucker on advanced difficulty or whatever it is so suck it). As most reviewers have mentioned though valve have lost the plot with episodic story-telling, don't release episodes unless you can at least manage one per year, and even thats a bit long.

the multiplayer ideas in halo were good, but the fact that it was halo couldn't rescue it
